News From Nome.
A let Lei lias been received from
Louis K. Kilert telling of his safe
arrival at Nome. The letter is* dated

were thirty-four days making the
trip and that he stood the'trip in
first-class shape. He thinks the
country is all right, hut would not

The three silver parties met in state
'convention at Pocatello Tuesday, ex
pecting to form fusion and run a
single ticket. Neither, as yet, has
progressed beyond temporary organiza
tion. In the democratic convention

committee appointed ard the conven
tion adjourned: The only contest is
that from Shoshone county. This
decision will probably determine the

The democratic convention was
called Lo order at 1:30 by Stale Chair
man John Hailey. Mr. Hailey said

the instructions of the committee.
He had not interfered In any wa\
with the election of delegates. Refer
ring to himself, he said he heard that
some thought he was too old to keep
in front, that he was broke and that
he should lie retired. He pleaded
guilty to being poor, but he believed
the poor were the backbone of the
state. Proceeding, he denounced

ley's prosperity, he said; was oppress
ing the people and calling on poor

of Kootenai, from the credentials
committee, stated that Major Woods,
one of the delegations from Shoshone,
had protested against the presence on
the committee of Cuughanour of Can
yon on the ground that he sat on the
committee at.Lewiston. Cuughanour
had agreed to call the Canyon dele
gates together to learn their wishes,
a'nd he had not yet reported. Chat
tel of Elmore moved that the com
mittees on resolutions and permanent,
organization be appointed. This
brought a protest from Watt of
Blaine. A Shoshone delegate pro
tested, claiming Shoshone desired
representation. Chattio's motion was

tion prevailed, 124 to 112. The vote

The convention then adjourned.
At the evening session, pernladent

In the populist convention the

the credentials committee.
On Thursday morning the conven
tion opened witli Steuncnherg's fight
against Dubois still on. All day the
light continued with much oratory,
which ended in the adoption, midst
wild cheers and hltfses, Of a resolution
against nominating a senator or ap
portioning the office, the vote stand
ing 125 lo to 121. Upon rCcelpt of
this news in Friday's paper the re
publicans of lluthdrutll had smiles
upon their faces which were a sight
to behold. A special wire to The
BlaDe simply said: "Conference
committee tied up on senatorial ques
tion. Looks like Dubois arid Goode."
Friday afternoon a report was
spread thfougout the town "that the
eon fen thins had split; the silver re
publicans had adjourned and 35 of
them had gone to Boise to' ratify thb
republican platform: the populists
were nominating a straight sticket
and the democrats were still lighting.
The smile of the republicans broad
ened and threatened to fracture their
features.

the silver q'uesti'hti, a'nd there can be
no doubt that if a specific declaration
for 10 to 1 had not been made, he
would haie declined t he nomination.
The great ICader would not have sacri
ficed his prfnCiples or betrayed the
people for the office, great as it is.
As the operator remarked, it was a
little bit of a telegram with a great
big signature. There were fifty names
signed to it, arid it cost $7.50 to
send it'.

brick to build the church. As soon
as forty thousand are on the ground
the masons will begin work.

The thill work is furnished by the
King Sash, Door and Lumber com
pany of Spokane. Mr. James Dyer
will secure the carpenter work, while
the plastering will be done by Mr. C.
Crowley of Spokane, Who did the work
on the Gonzaga college. Brown Bros,
of Spokane are making and gilding
the cross, Which will be of galvanized
steel anil abolit seven feet high. The
heating apparatus is the invention of
Father Purcell and is of the hot-air

variety.
A feature of the building are the
windows, which are 13x3 feet, of
Colored cathedral*glass With leaded
sash. Some are donations and are of
beautiful design. The chlireh wiil lie
completed without fiifnishlhge by the
first of November.
