Heyburn is a brilliant man but as a politician he Is not exceptionally wise. The pen pie nve declared In favor of the savings banks. They want them established and they do not care one lota whetner these banks will "est.ab lish a rate of interest" ur not. They simply want the banks aod they are entitled to have what they want, ll the postofflee banks could Ox a rate of interest and fix it properly, there would be cause for great public re joining. Ioterestrai.es are absurdly high in the west. A man who hor riHMiu fimn mortgage as often as not pays nine or ten per cent, a rate which is little short of usury. Unfortunately, however, the postal hanks cannot Bx rates or even in tluence them. They are needed in order to prevent the burying of money, more than anything else. Instead or harming existing banks, the posl otllce Institutions would aid them. People who will not trust their sav ings to private or semi-private hanks and who hoard their money in stock I of iogs ami chimney corners will use the government banks, and so much more ^ l money will be released Tor the public. | use. The probabilities arc that quite , a large part of these deposits will he ' iH loaned by the government to lhl ., national hanks. These institutions have proved entirely successful in othercoumr.es; nowhere have they Interfered with the legitimate entet prises of private bankers and there Is no reason whatever for the opposition Senator Heyburn or any other representative of "the Interests." of Tendency of the Times. The tendency is to less acreage a id better cultivation. This idea h is commenced to take root in the west, on the prairie farm, where only a few years ago the disposition was to own all the land in sight. Farm ing has grown more laborious, farm hands are harder to get and prices greatly advanced. It is much harder to handle a sec tion of cultivated land, meadow or grain crop, than when it was a native grass pasture. As the farming im proves the labor of taking care of it ln< A .u -r increases. Again, says the Twen ..., n , . . . , : tieth Century Farmer, high priced j land cannot be left in native sod for ! pasture, because it will not pay. In tensive farming is forcing itself upon the lai d owner in the agricultural west. More crop and less land is the demand of the times. The flirty-acre farm is now the subject for discussion in the farm journal. What can be j r iduced on five acres? This and many more of the possibilities of small land owner ship are discussed. The fruit garden the truck patch and the poultry yard are all grouped together and coupled to the small land holdings of the suburban resident. It is reasonably certain that the acre property idea will be greatly enlarged upon from this time forward, especially about the towns, villages, and suburban districts of cities. The possibility of the acre lot, when it is properly improved, solves to a great degree the living expenses of the family. It makes the city mechanic and business man, in a measure, dependent of the demand and of ! i iii sup ply of the city market. A family liv ing provided on the acre farm is dependence that gives contentment and happiness where otherwise the luxuries of a garden and orchard • p ! i u a I Would possibly not be enjoyed, or îng but very sparingly. Within the next t|uarter of a century the acre proper tv of the town and village will be the prevailing idea instead of the ' town lot.—Farm Progress. I •»"Subscribe for The Rathdrum Tribune.
