Muoh has been said about the de mands of Wall Street for a more elastic currency. This is the same Wall Street that was insistent a few years ago for a stable currency, and clamored for the single gold stand ard. The best comment we have seen appeared in a recent issue of the Llu ■colu Trade Review. That paper points out that gold standard Schitf out-pope the Populists in asking that back notes be made a basis for the issuance of currency. Cau it be possible that the money center has been converted to the Populist idea, or is Mr. Scbiff the only oonvert? "The fact is," says the Trade Re view, "that the gamblers of Wall Street who bold their high priced speculations against loss are willing to pay exorbitant and unreasonable rates of interest, are the only real parties making a demand that is really felt for an increase in the cur rency. The outside country is not coffering today from a lack of cur rency and circulating medium. The business over the entire country is being satisfactorily taken care of by the volume of currency now in exist ence, and interest rates in all lines of legitimate business, outside of gambling speculations of Wall Street, •never were lower. The west is hand ! ftag today the greatest crop it has grown. aDd not suffering from lack of currency. Western banks that carry large deposits of surplus funds in the oast, have not drawn seriously npon their reserve, and no real eastern money, deposited by eastern people, and owned by eastern people, has been called into the west to aid 'the present crop movement. "The queetion arises, why Che whole country should be threatened with the advocacy of asaet currency, just because the speculators in New Yark City run short in money to keep • up their margins. ~"It will be remembered when there was a real panic in this country, on one or two occasions the big banks of New York City represented in their clearing bouse association, tided over critical conditions by issuing clearing house certificates. That is, 'certificates that ail the banks u t tbe city, with alt their capital and assets stood behind, and agreed to make good. If New York creates in its own limits, through speculation a •dmmcial condition that is a disgrace "to a civilized country, as Mr Scbiff says, why should not New Y ork take autre of its own condition without in rvoiving tbe rest of the country? It 'would be much better for clearing thouse certachates, limited to use and circulation in New Y'ork city, to be legalized and used in taking care of themselves when the speculators run interest rates up, rather than to have tbe whole country iu tbe issue of as 'set currency; and better than to in volve Secretary Shaw's plan, of allow ing notes payings high tax to be tern porarily issued by natioual banks. "As 90 per cent of the purely stock, 'speculation of the country is limited to Wall street and its immediate '-surronDdings, why not let New York City banks take care of its specu lative tusiuees, and leave the rest of : tbe country aione? Tbe conditions rtbat exist here would not even be re ■ medied, at least only temporarily, if more elasticity as urged hy many were given to the national carrency. Wall Street has conditions ail its own, and those conditions ought to be cared for by tbe financial interests there, which at least asaist in creating them, rather than have tbe entire ■ country and tbe carrency of the county involved in tbe unnatural and 'illegitimate conditions of speculation that exist in that place. PUBLISH THE NEWS. Publish the news as it occurs witb -oot fear or favor. Tbe people will stand behind tbe newspaper that hasps this fact in view. The Press ball eves it to he a duty to tbe public ta give all legitimate news, and in 'this it la not aioue. Tbe National ^Printer Journalist says ou this sub A$a01: '"The first duty of a newspaper via to gWa tbe news, not to give par tlll, partisan or garbled accouota of ihappsoioea with tbe view of serving the iotareata or prejudloea of the pub lllabai'or of any individual, corpora ttioo, • oflqua, ring or party. The newspaper of today, whatever may be -the polities or beliefs of the editor or pahllsberc dg^amle npon the whole com mu u ity foV support. Neither the renters or the advertisers of any worthy modem newspaper are of any one party or creed. Even if they were, this is the day of ludepeudeut thought, and all patrons who are of any substantial value to a uewspapet want the tacts upon which to form honest judgments." "We anticipate that our democratic ! friends will make a great howl duriug < the aomiog campaign about tbe in ; crease iu taxes iu Idaho. But lu j their efforts to make political capital | out of tbe question, they will forget to tell you that Idaho is forging ahead ] by leaps and that it requires more I money to keep the wheels of our state j government goiug today than it did j ten, or even six years ago." ■ > This is the argument advanced by tbe Montpelier Examiner, a sup | porter of Mormon church dictation | in politics and ail else Mormon. If i its argument is true what has become | of the great increase iu wealth, in taxable property, that should natur ally follow growth by "leaps and bounds." Tbe admission that taxes \ are higher and the argument defend ing tbe increase would couvict any indlviduial on trial before a jury of iuseucerity. Tbe manner iu which the govern ment is going after tbe big Chicago packers is causing more squeals than come fiom the bogs which they butcher. President Roosevelt is back of tbe prosecutions and will make it warm for the Sandard Oil company before he quits uuless we | are decieved in the man. We believe ; in president Roosevelt's policy, and j tbe efforts that are being made among trust senators and prominent mouop | olists of the couutry to discredit him and bring about a reaction agaiust : his popularity will result iu firmer ; support by tbe people. Roosevelt is the president of all tbe people regard less of color, condition, creed or po i litical views, and tbe people will uphold him so long as be continues tbe good work in their behalf. It is refreshing to note that John McCall is forced to give up some ot his iligotten gains to the policy hold ers of the New Y ork Life insurance company. Some sympathy is ex pressed for tbe man, but why should be be permitted to live like a king in a palace builded with the money which he took from the pockets of thousands of policy holders through out the country? Lectures no I'aiunsaUm. .The Brst of a series of Pour Sun day afternoon lectures on Unitarian ism will be given by Rev J. A. Curzan., of Spokane, in McFarlands hall tomorrow, Jan. 28, at four o'clock. Tbe subject will be "Uni tarianism, and What it Stands For."
