J* Washington, 8ept. 17.—Just at > ! o'clock a frightful calamity was : narrowly averted at the east front of the capitol. When the doors w ere opened people rushed almost frantically to the main staircase. The police and military guards were swept aside and almost in a , twinkling there was a tremendous crush at the foot of the great staircase, strong men held child ren and even women high above the heads of the surging crowd to protect them from bodily injury.
