The public is still waiting for that arc light at the depot. Isn't it about time the city or the rail road or the lighting company did something about it? The question now agitating the members of the Idaho legislature does not seem to be so much "who struck Billy Patterson," as who gave G. W. Thompson his state land lease, P. L. Orcutt, formerly proprie tor of the Troy News, has pur chased an interest in the Star Mirror at Moscow and will devote his attenoions to that paper in future. With Pete at the helm of a democratic paper the repub licans can expect some glorious rippings up the back between now and the end of the next campaign. The local option lobbyists at the stste capital thought they had things coming their way with a rush late last week when the local option bill passed the lower j house and was sent up to the ; senate. This body, however, in ! troduced a measure of its own (much milder than the house ; measure and from present indi cations the first named bill is ! destined to die a slow death in 'some committee's hands, while ! the senate bill may eventually i become a law. Having become tired of kicking a large size job press and turn ing a big cylinder press, after several years of such labor, we have lightened our labor and add ed to our printing facilities this week by attaching power to both presses. This will enable us to handle our work much more rapidly and to better advantage and we now feel safe in saying that we have one of the best equipped offices of its size in the ; state. We are in shape to han ble all classes of job and poster I work with neatness and dispatch and our prices are right. Call in j and see us when you have print ing to be done. Parents do wrong in keeping their children hanging around j home, sheltered and enervated by parental indulgence. The eagle does better. It stirs up its nest when the young eagles are able to fly. They are compelled to shift for themselves, for the i old eagle literally turns them out, Mrs. Cleveland and Mrs. Harri son, widows of two of our late presidents, have been granted free postage for the balance of their lives by congress. Wouldn't this be a graft for some of the post card fiends. Why don't the business men of Cottonwood get together and induce some electric company to extend a power line to our city. With the power that could be sold here it seems to us as if a line here would be a paying prop osition. The answer to "when is a wife not a wife" is usually "when she is divorced," but this does not seem to cut any ice with the Cal ifornia courts, which have de cided that the divorced wife of Frank Abbot, who is now married to a second husband, is still wife enough of Abbot to collect her share of $50,000 left by an uncle to Abbot and his wife and child. and at the same time tears down all the feathers from the nest. Tis this rude and rough experi- 1 ence that makes the king of birds so fearless in his flight and so expert in the pursuit of prey. It is a misfortune to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth, for you have it to carry and plague all your days. Riches often hang like a dead weight. Yea, like a millstone about the neck of am bitious young men. —Ex. Indian Summer. A dark blue haze hangs heavily ^ Upon the distant hill. The fields are clothed in Autumn brown, The air seems hushed and still, A slender, silv'ry, lovely stream, The rocks all covered green with moss. Where oft' in June and April we Can see a muddy brooklet toss. The spreading fields of golden grain— The harvest days are over, And barns are filled for winter days With hay and grain and clover. The ring dove, pheasant and the grouse, . The deer, no danger heeding, In quiet peace with mate and flock In fern and meadows feeding. Zip—Zip-and Zip again; Cones! A squirrel in yonder tree, The noisy, chattering little elf, A pile of cones below I see. Oh, happy quiet Autumn days Of rest and joy and pleasure, We cherish them iu memory, A precious.gladsome treasure. Knoll Meadows, Idaho. A Bit of Idaho History. It may not be generally known, but it is nevertheless a fact, that a newspaper was printed at Lap wai, twelve miles from Lewiston, in 1836. The first mission was established there in that year and this brought about the publi cation of the newspaper. It was the first press and type outfit set up on the Pacific coast north of Mexico, thus giving to Idaho the honor of having the earliest press on the west coast. The first mining excitement which really brought permanent population and settlement was that of the Orofino stampede of 1861 and '62, which resulted in the location of Lewiston, Pierce City, Florence and Warrens. A year or two later these gold pro spectors swarmed further south into Boise basin where rich gold placers were discovered and which led to the removal of the state capital from Lewiston to Boise in 1864.
