MEAD, EDITOR. •:f Official Paper of County. Foreign Gold. Mr. Cleveland and the rest of the go'.d buggers tell us in every other breath that the free coinage of silver will surely drive all the gold out of the country. Well, that would ho pretty bad it would be very bad ir view of the fact that gold is so scarce already that Mr. Cleveland, only a few weeks ago, gave Rothschilds & Co. a bonus of about ten millions to get from abroad some thirty-two millions of gold. Half of that sixty-four million sale of bonds was to be paid'for with gold from Europe. That was the boasted stipulation of our Wall street presi dent! Oh, we must not drive the gold out of the country. If we should authorize the coinage of silver we might have to pay more than ten mil lion dollars as a bonus to get 110 Cedar BapidB Gazette- Since hides are on the free list there is not so much profit as pleasure in skinning the administration. Every cclipse of the "silver moon" is rated by Cleveland as another vic tory for his financial vagaries. For men who are said to know little the free silverites force the other fel lows to do a great deal of apologizing. Gold speculators are willing to have the gold dollar made lighter. They would get a nice rake off on recoinage. Gold men now say that the way to test a dollar is to burn it. That is also a good way to test wheat, corn, house and promissory note. Cleveland once said that federal of fice holders were servants and not masters of the people. Since he has become better acquainted with himself and his subordinates he concludes that it is nicer to be masters, and hire servants to do the work. Queer Settlement- The great Seiter bank failure in St. Clair county seems to have reached terms of settlement. ThS St. Louis National Bank of Commerce is to be paid $58,012.48 the St. Louis Nation al Bank of the Republic is to be paid $10,001,51 the LaClede National Na tional Bank of St. Louis is to be paid $10,822.22 the State Bank of St. Louis, $15,586.86 the Lafayette Bank of St. Louis, $10,377.77 the German American bank of St. Louis, $2,019.33. The remainder, if there shall be any, says the agreement, shall be divided among the hundreds of the private de positors who had their small savings in the bank. Why these banking in stutions should be paid first seems a little queer, but this is banking meth ods, and the monopoly papers urge people to put their money in banks!— Progressive Farmer. •Then I Am a Populist'' OtA-atJjurlingtoB-Ju iiHion, Missmri, a few weeks ago, Col. W. H. Harvey spoke to an immense crowd of people, and a listener interrupting asked the question: "What are your politics?'' to which Mr. Harvey replied: '•If the republican party declares anew the principles of Lincoln, I am a republican. If the democrats declare anew the principles of Jefferson, I am a democrat but if both the old parties declare in favor of Great Britain and the gold standard financial policy, then I am a populist." These remarks were' greeted with greater applause than any other part of the entire speech. Farmers, as sure as you are a foot high and have the least bit of bone in your spinal column swearing time has come. Fifteen dollar mules, ten cent oats and fifteen cent corn, with the as surance of 100 cent taxes, ought to settle the question. If your consci ence forbids your swearing, go round to the back side of the barn or the granary and write 'er down in great big, bold characters, but don't do it if you are going to "vote 'er straight" next time that would bo an abomination in the sight of the Lord and on the. last day the very barn would appear in judgment against you. Kuskin, the noted author and writer comes to the defense of Judas, on the ground that remorse for what he had done caused him to throw away the money received, and to go straight way and hang himself. Well, that is an improvement upon the ordinary Wall street shylock sure enough. Their professed regard for labor, is as false as the kiss of Judas, but they lack the courage and manliness to ap ply the remedy for their removal from earth. The goose-bone is nearly all white this year, and the result will be that snow will lie on the ground from early in December until late in April. A long, cold winter, tilled with bluster ing storms ahead. There are other signs that conlirra this. Corn husks are unusually thick and woodchucks and chipmonks are already fat enough to kill. Coal is also advancing and cord wood is unusually scarce N. D. Sittings. If the silver in the silACr dollar TAX SALE. State of Iowa, Howard County. Office of County Treasurer.
