Mo-leaf Chronicle. 15 CENTS PER WEEK. BftANDON 4 BABKSDA.LB, PROP'S On Mora Important State Office to Fill, The DemfXTatic State convention failed to perform one duty before ad jotirnnient, and rather than call an extra sohhIoii, the State Wheel, at its coming annual meeting, August 12, should jierform that duty for the ike of Mr. Buchanan, and that is elect a State fool killer to do ui the cranks that can't be happy in the en joyment of a victorious triumph but must kick the fat in (he fire by trying to do some smart thing, drag ging in obnoxious and whimsical Bide Issues, forcing candidates to ex pr89 themselves for or against the tomfool sub-treasury bill and the like, and threatening to retire our ablest and most trusted Congress' men, who are honest and outspoken against such a wild and ruinous scheme, and will accept retirement rather than stultify honest con science. Mr. liuchanan has been nominated on a broad Democratic platform, embracing every principle and de mandingall the legislation that any reasonable farmer could ask for. Mr. liuchanan's friends made the plat form and purposely left out all sub terfuges. Mr. Buchanan, as a repre aeutative of the farmer element, ac cepted that platform and stands upon It. Merchants, lawyers and all classes, as well as farmers, are rally lite to his support on it. Mr; Buch anan himself, though having advo . cated the force bill as the national union platform, repudiated the meas urebelore his nomination, after its weakness and danger had been so thoroughly exposed by our purest and best statesmen. More thun half of the Alliance men in the State are opposed to it. Some of the most prominent delegates from this Slate to the St. Louis convention opposed and voted against its adopt ion. Now will the organization, alter winning ho great a victory in the State con vention, allow a lot of cranks to de stroy the harmony that pervad s the entire ranks, the good feeling that is crystaling around the candidate, and hazard Mr. Buchanan's chances of election by continuing the agitation of sucn a measure t vve would urge the Slate Wheel to renounce the measure and elect a fool killer. "A Booted and Spurred Highwayman." Senator Vest of Missouri closing his masterly 8eech against the ini quities of the McKinley tariff bill, a dd : "The Bastile had frowned in dark and somber terror upon the populace of 1'aris, while king and courtier, philosopher and patriot passed away. It seemed eternal; but at last it fell, and the nightmare of the ages ended. Americans boasted of their free lnsti tutions, of liberty and equality ; but, who (he asked) could call himself a freeman, save in niockwry, when, by force of law, the proceeds of his life and labor were unjustly taken to en rich another? The struggle for hu man rights was not ended ; nor could it be until the unequal and the unjust system of taxation, which (now with the mask of protection) rode like a booted and spurred hiyli wayman over the country and tram pled under foot an enraged people. Tho tempters took him by the arm and led him up the marble stairway into I lie great hall, and though he pulled back th daring he would have nothing to do with the infamon thlng, when he reached the speak ers stand and met the smiles of Sa tan Ilouk who commanded, "hold up thy head and look out upon this vast varigated audience, and accept, and all of these will follow the;' and shall tietliineand a crown of honor shall compiiss thy brow," Lewis Wilted and accepted. What do the people of Montgom ery county, white and black, think of the delegi.tes who went to the He publican Convention and voted to endorse the infamous I.odgii force bill which proposes to destroy that peace, good feeling and' freedom of ballot that exists here between the races? Ignorance is the only excuse they can plead and we are glad there were not more than two white men in the delegation. Ilouk, Kvans and Alf. Taylor came all the way from Washington to Nashville to have the Republican Convention endorse the infamous force bill. If there is any self-re-apect left in the people of East Ten nessee, they will forever retire these 'contemptable, treasonable, nttio cious assassinators." The Lkak Ciikonu i.k is indebted to B. A. Knloe for a copy of his great Hpeech against the infamous force bill. There are few abler, work er iti ingress than Mr. h'nloe, and acaicely anyone whom the Uepuli caus hate more cordially. Honk, Taylor and Kvans may have succeeded in bracing Maxtor's spinal column, but they alsodroppe.1 a aplder In his dumpling. For Bent. , Th bind new bouse recently vacated by Wm.
