The good results ol the election
crop out every day. If Grovir
Cleveland had not b :i elected the
people would have known nothing
about Hog Island. The Mclvioley
bill did it.
' The Memphis Commercial feuggests
that the citizens ot the Bluff City in
Vite Col. Colyar, of Nashville, to
come down and make them a speech
on the question of reform in the city
government. Again we arise to rec
ommend Bam Jones for this work.
Col. Colyar could tackle any city in
Middle Tennessee, except Knoxville,
with a fair prospect of success, but
Memphis, never.
The most foolish thing that any
president ever incorporated in a
message to Congress was put by
President Harrison in his recent
message, his last say. He goes to
Census Porter and Commissioner
Peck for data to uphold the McKin
ley idett of protection, both of whom
were denounced as political tiars fox
political eiftct at the election a month
ago. It would have been a better mea
sage, perhaps, if this portion of it had
been cut out. TJie people understco l
these reports before they voted. i
: It appears that the Populists out in
Kansas are braver in drawing the
. line with the devil than are the
thurches. It has been decided that
no Inaugural ball will be held, when
Gov. Lewelling is inducted .into
office. This question was settled by
a batch of resolutions passed at a.
recent Populist meeting out there,
denouncing dancing -as "immoral,
degiading and disgraceful worldiy
pleasure, indorsed by society c!a-ses
of which the Peoples' jpirty whs In
no wise a part." This question was
passed on the recommendation of the
Governor-elect and Sister Lease.
The latter, no doubt, got enough of
dancing while she was campaigning
in the "rebellious South," dodging
over ripe egus.
The monetary conference st Brus
sels is not doing much and free sil
ver advocates do not think anything
definite will come of the meeting.
One good.' thing, however, has been
accomplished by Hon. Ja. B. Mc
C'reary, of Kentucky, a member of
the American delegation : He has
succeeded In knocking the Both
childfl proposition" into a cocked hat.
The American plan of li nutation has
been introduced by Mr.- McCreary,
and he made a great speech when he
presented It. - In "concluding" his
speech he said : - "I believe the best
aim of the conference to be the gen
eral remonetization of the silver and
the unrestricted coinage of gold and
and silver into money of debt-paying
power, with a permanent inter
national ratio of 15J or 1GJ to 1, and
I prefer the latter. This, in my
opinion, is a system that would give
unity and stability to the value of
money and would furnish the best
remedy .for the existing evils from
frofu which all civilized nations are
suffering ." There is very little
doubt that a large majority of people
of the United States are in line with
the foregoing utterance. It is Dem
ocratic, and furthermore is logical
and just.
