saT.Mliniin-IW - W H LOCAL ITEMS. NEB LETT 4. GRANT, Local Editor: FRIDAY, JANWARY 29, 1858. tV Chronicle Office over W H. Brjarly'i Store. Jd W take pleasure in announcing to the reader of the Chronicle that we eh all commence in our next paper the publica tion of ft new atory by our Senior Editor, and shall continue it in each successive issue until completed. All our readers must remember the char ming stories wo have already been favored with from Mr. Thomas' pen, and will we know be gratified at the announcement we now make. We have had the pleasure of looking Over the initial chapters of this new story, and we can assure our friends, that if the interest which characterises them is sus tained, jn the succeeding one, (and no doubt it will even bo greatly inrrcated) it will prove the best story Mr. T. has ever written. Let every one who is now a subscriber to this paper commence to read the story In our next issue, and we advise all who are not now subscribers to become so, at once for ltfr. Thonas' story alone will more than repay the cost of the paper. W notice that Col. Faxon, in the last number of the jeffenonian, attempts to ex cuse a transaction exceedingly dishonor ing to the dignity of his' new title. He gives the same false coloring to his inglo rious flight, which Falstaff did to Trinee Hal, concerning his encounter with the "eleven men in buckram." The Colonel well knows, that, the military company that elicited, so eloquent an address from Gen. Haskell, called not upon him fr a spocimon of his stirring oratory, but only wished to be drilled by so splendid a sol dier, and receive instructions from so re nowned a tactician. Had his avowed mo tive, of not wishing to eclipse our distin guished visitor, been sincere, he would cer tainly have taken command of the compa ny in the outset and conducted them in his own person to Gen. Haskell, thus ad ding tho attraction of his magestic pres ence, and tho high honor of his great military reputation. With the deepest awo of his despotic power, wo must say that his retreat was the grossest manifestation of an unsoldierly timidity we ever witnessed. The Colonel seems to admire the adroitness of his man oeuvre in escaping from his own soldiers, bat we much fear his strategy is better suit ed to the skulking ambuscade of Indian warfare, than tho manly tactics of the American soldier, that loves to meet his foe in tho open field. We ha: pen to km w the nature of the Col's hiding place, which ho terms "refuge in a neighboring store." We wero told by tho Merchant of said store, that long after the clamorous calls of tho "Guards" had ceased, and the uotos of their drum had died away in the dis tance, a trembling form, striped by the dark soot into the horrific likeness of an Indian warrior, dropped from his chimney into tho ashes below; and he recognized tJjQ unmistakeable lineaments of the dis tinguished Colonel. Crawling out of the ashes, ho crept stealthily to the back doori and opening it, sprang out, and was soon lost from view in tho devious windings of those back alleys. A solitary pedestrian pursuing his lonely way through those un frequented lanes, saw him clear a tremen dous cedar palisade at one superhuman bound. Hushing like a meteor through M'Koin & Bailey's lower cabinet rooms, the astonished workmen had only time to reach the door through which he passed out, and catch a glimpse of his streaming skirts, as he entered tho cellar beneath his office just opposite. Thus hath tho vain glorious Colonel, who in all his "pride of place" threatened to have us shot for want of respect, committed a deed that should bo punishable only with tho "rope." Great ly staggered is our faith in appearances -when we witness such nrr.int poltroonryl in one, trom wnoso lormniame port, anu heroio antecedents, we had expected such unfading laurels, in futuro fields. "Thi following is tho amount of Taxa ble property, in this County, for tho last year: Value of Taxable Land All other property, 1851 $5,037,108. f 1.700,5 12 Total amount ?10,':W,010. Note the change lnaao in Miss Mary lkautticnt' advertisement. Herman Mclvilm. The Fifth Lec ture to the Literary Association, was de livered on last Friday evening, by this distinguished author. With our small skill in criticism, we feci entirely Unable to do justice to the production of so ripe a genius and so pure a taste. Indeed tho subject was so faultless in conception and execution, that its subtle yet marvellous beauty escaped only the most appreciative sonsibility and the most cultivated discern ment. With that true instinct of gonitis, which turns aside from lofty and high sounding themes, Mr. Melville selected one of unpretending title, from which to educe noble anil inexhaustible thought, and quiet, but none the less striking phi losophy. His subject was "Statues in Rome;" and having been himself a wan derer in that grand old city, whose very name fires the imagination of the classic student with the magio of storied antiq uity; he brought those mute forms of a distant age out of the dim and dreamy haze of fancy, into the bright and vivid light of reality. He had looked with no un thoughtful eye upon those glorious mas terpieces of ancient genius from which the artists of a modern day have drawn all their inspiration. Unbiassed by the prepossessions of fancy, he traced in the marble features of those great warriors, philosophers, statesmen, and poets, whoBe names are now almost deified, the same lineaments of passion, and frailty, that blend in the noblest faces of our own day; and though thus stripping thein of their divinity, made them dearer to us as men. The description of the ideal statuary of Rome, held us breathless by its wonderful nicety of appreciation, and subtlety of ex pression. Of all the tributes of genius to the Apollo, and Venus de Medici, those statues that "enchant the world," we never read one more worthy of their divine beau ty. The expression of doubt, and dark groping of human speculation, in the ideal statuary of that age, when tho old mythol ogy was passing away, and men's minds had not yet reposed in the new faith, was finely portrayed. A most striking and beautiful thought was introduced, when speaking of tho equestrian statues of Rome, and the expression of untamed do cility, rather than conquered obedience which their artists have given to the horse, the lecturer deduced tho enlarged human ity of that elder day, when man gave him self none of those upstart airs of supe riority over tho bruto creation which he now assumes. We do not remember in all our reading to have met with a more beautiful passage, than that in which Mr. Melville described his musings in tho Coliseum, and tho re currence of his imagination far back to the day when its mighty walls enclosed such countless throngs to witness the gladitorial combats, and the eye of fancy saw many in the vast assemblage who looked not coldly on tho dying gladiator whose eyes looked far away to where ! is rude hut by the Danube lay, There were his young barbarians all ut play. Rut we hung entranced upon the clo sing remarks of tho lecturer, which vindi cated these spiritual productions of the ancient mind from their alleged inferiority to the utilitarian inventions of the pres ent age. Isever before was the superiority of art over science, so triumphantly and eloquently sustained. But we will not add nioro of our feeble praise to a production which, if published, would elicit commen dation from the highest critical sources. Somo objected to Mr. Melville's subdued delivery; but if we rightly reflect, we will observe a striking congeniality between this quiet manner and those mute forms that stand still and silent amid the vene rable ruins of "ancient Rome." Those who appreciate the sublimity of Nature, only when tho storm is loosed, and are insensible to tho grandeur of her noontide silenco, felt not the beauty of Mr. Melville's lecture. Those who prefer, what they term truth, and practicality and subjects of every day interest, who relish the strong meat that makes bone and muscle, above that "Nectar of the Gods" that sublimates a finer essence, tasted not of tho divino chalice that the lecturer held to their lips. Mr. Melvillo noes from us, with the appreciation of many pure tastes, and tho kindly feelings of many hearts that penetrated through the natural reserve of his charac.cr to the noble nature beneath. K. M'Kinnon, at Covington's old stand, on Franklin Street, is selling Confection aries, of all kinds, upon good terms. Mc. is a clever gentleman, and we bespeak for him a share of public patronage. We stepped in nt the extensive Hard ware establishment of McCall, Vanlcer & Co., at Nashville, tho other day, and saw a very largo and imposing stock of Hard ware in all its varieties. This firm ap pears to bo doing an extensive business. Tuc Sai.lie West bus commenced rcg ulas trips from Nashville to St. Louis. Miner, at tho sign of the ttriped pole, on Strawberry Alley, is prepared to i'AfTf you at bliort notice. Ho has, imported from Nashville, an excellent Barber, and I'ti a now cvfiZuU aud thave in good stylo. Gcw. Wm. T. Haskell delivered the aixth lecture to the Xiterary Association, on last Saturday night. The great pres tige of his namo drew an overflowing house. The address being decidedly unique in its style and arrangement, it is difficult to eritioise it with reference to ordinary standards. It possessed to the last degree one admitted characteristic of the loftiest genius that is supreme disregard of all the unities. Those dull minds which de mand logical arrangement, and are unable to follow the erratio flights of the "divine afflatus," complained of the General's di gressions. As for ourselves we watched with unreprcsscd delight, the meteoric brili aney and velocity of his motions. Now "he dragged up drowned honor by the locks," now "plucked bright honor from the pale face moon," anon, did light "like Mercu ry on a heaven kissing hill" and lo ! "deep sunken in the shady sadness of a valo." The subject of the General's lecture was "the distinguished men and women of Kentucky and Tennessee, and parallel be tween Clay, Calhoun and Webster." He began his thome with an exordium of ex ceeding taste and beauty, which commend ed to the good people of Clarksville, the adornment of the little sheet of water, known as "McFall's pond," with a sur rounding of iron railing; said railing to be decorated with flowers and shrubbery and thus transformed into "a thing of beauty" to be "a iov forever." We have heard that our worthy Mayor and Aldermen, will consider this proposition at their next meeting. We much fear, however, that their practical minds will not be able to take in so ethereal a fancy. Should the expense bo an objection, let them remem ber that other suggestion of the same fertile minds, that debts are only the inter est and not the principal. After tho eloquent peroration, the Gen eral introduced his "dramatis pcrsonae;" and we must here express our mortification at the paucity of great names in Tennessee. If we rightly remember, tho "Gen eral made mention of but one "sed id fuit Ta-o." Wo congratulate our sister state on her superabundance of heroes. 'Tis true Gen. Haskell made mention of many, whose acquaintance Madam Fame has not yet made, but she will certainly, since her favorite's recognition of their claims, hasten to atone for her neglect. It bchoovcth her also to discard her old fogy partiality for Homer, Milton and Shakspcare, and dispense her favors to one of Kentucky's eons, whose superiority over all these great masters of the lyre, the Gen cral has abundantly proven. But it is impossible for us in the space of an article to do justice to a literary repast, whose variety would shame the multifarious con tents of the witches' caldron in Mcacbcth We must notice however the closing sen tences of the General's address. If the exordium was grand, the conclusion swept the soul with the grand symphonies of "the Harp ef a thousand strings." He ended by giving tho synopsis of a poem, which he says is the "Cliff de Oeiivr'e" of his life, embracing every science, every art, and every subject that has excited hu man thought, from the days of Adam to our own time. The concctrated essence of all these, he poured upon tho audience in one rushing and breathless sentence. His recent poetical effusions awaken a lively curiosity to hear the wondrous "epic" and we hope he will soon fulfill his prom ise to deliver it to the Association here. We give place to the following advertise ment, without exactly knowing what our fair friends are "up to." Wo have no doubt their challenge will be accepted by some gallant bachelor, and wo tender them the use of our columns hoping that the correspondence to follow, will be profitable to them and interesting to our readers : For the Chronicle. Wl made a flying trip, to' Nashville, last week, and were gratified at its improve ments, especially on tho publio . square, where have been reared stately and elegant business houses, of four and five stories, on grounds previously occupied by hum blo and unsightly buildings. We visited the Methodist Publishing Hou, and were highly gratified at the large scale of its operations, and at the perfection to which printing has been brought in our State. The Book Bindery, too, connected with this Houso, is doing a large business, and we saw specimens of binding not surpass ed, even in New York. Persons having binding to do, will consult their own in terest by patronizing this establishment We also made a hurried call at the Mcdi cal University, which is in a high state of prosperity the students numbering over three hundred, and tho Faculty, able and popular. The Museum, belonging to this School, is one of tho best in tho West, The skeletons a're in the best style of French preparation, and the whole collec tion is highly creditable to this prosper ous Medical School. Criminal Court, Judge Turner prcsi ding, has been in session all the week. The three capital cases from Stewart coun ty, viz: estate ri tieorge Atkins, same vt Dr. Rutland, and the same vt Mrs. Norris were continued. Only two felony cases have been tried, viz: State v$ Terrance M'Man nus, indited for murder, and Patrick Wade for murder. Owing to the absconding of the most material witnesses to parts un known, in the McMannus case the State was not able to obtain a verdict of ruur der against the defendant, which crime was clearly proved before the committing court and the jury found him guilty of manslaughter, and sentenced him to the Penitentiary for three years. The jury in tho Wado case had not been able to agree at the adjournment of court last night. The State w Maria, a slave, for the mur der of Hodges, was continued. The school deserves abundantly its great success. The Prin cipal and his lady have but few equals in their profession as teachers and disciplinarians, and their corps of assistants is admirable.
