i The vote in lirookiyn i.s close and the

The scheme for the ^Greater Xmv

one city government of New York and
i Brooklyn, the whole of Richmond and !
King counties, with port ions* of West-1
ehester and Queens. The whoRrera cbv-j

squire miles; and the population of the
cities,counticsand towns will only bo a few
thousand short of 3,000^000.
In the bill whi h relates to the subject,
provision was only made fur an expres?
sion of opinion on the part of the people
as to the advisability of consolidation,
and this is what the. vot of yesterday
means. The consolidation will not take
effect until legislative provisions shall;
have been made upon the subjects of tax- j

An important question settled by the

relative to the underground railway. The
law authorizing the submission of this;

Chattanooga, Tcnu., Nov. Ii.?M,
O'Brien, ex-supreme treasurer, of the j
Catholic Knights of America, will have to
stand ti i;;l in the circuit court here on the ??
charge of embezzlement.
When the criminal case against him
was brought up in the circuit court here j
tlie case was thrown out ofcourl by Judge
Moon on a plea of abatement, the defense
claiming that the knights had not com?
plied wiih the act of 1.-!.'!, which, under
the head of the "foreign corporation lav, " ,
requires outside companies to file their
charters in this state.
The supreme, ?? uirl yesterday reversed ;
the decision of the lower court, and the
case will come up on its merits at the Jau
uary term.
Both O'Brien and Maj. M. H. Clift, his
leading counsel, are iu Knoxville, where
' u new bond was probably made at once as
j required by law.
The case will be p.r< secured by Wheeler
and McDcrmotl, attorneys und they have,
iustruction to prosecute to the bitter end
for the knights. In all probability Maj.
Clift will be the leading attorney for the,
defense.
