Funds are now available tor a local training program for prac tical nurses, John Gernon, local manager of the Illinois State Employment Office said Satur day. Financed and sponsored through federal funds provided by the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962, the program is scheduled to begin Aug. 5 and last approximately 48 weeks. The first class will consist of about 30 trainees, Gernon said. He stated results of a local sur vey of the needs of each of the hospitals and nursing homes in dicated that “about 100 practical nurses are needed in this area." “However, due to limited training facilities, we recom mended that the first class be about 30.” he said. “If every thing works out all right and we still have the need, there will be another program later.” Selection and screening of ap plicants will be done by the Stale Employment Department. Unit 4 Handles Actual hiring of instructors and training will be handled by the Unit 4 School District Voca tional Education Department, under C. E. Summerville, direc tor. Burnham, Mercy, Carle and Cole Hospitals, and various area nursing homes will assist in the training program by providing facilities for the clinical portion. Summerville said the first 14 weeks of training would he in a classroom and the classroom laboratory, under the supervi sion of licensed professional nurses. The professional nurses will work with the group in the pre clinical training and also go with the trainees as clinical instruc tors, when they transfer to the hospitals for on-the-joh training. “Training will be given in all phases of practical nursing obstetrics, pediatrics. Geriatrics, etc,” Summerville said. “It will be the regular one year inten ;ve program ior pratuuai nu« li es.” He added that representati\cs from all the hospitals, the Pro fessional Nurses Assn . the Li censed Practical Nurses Assn, and the Champaign County Med ical Assn, are serving on the ad visory committee. HS Requirements Gernon said that applicants should be between age 17 and | 54, and, if born after July 1, 1926, must have two years of high school education or its equival ent. Applicants born before that date need only an eighth grade education. “We are trying to train local people for the jobs.” he said, "therefore local and area resi dents will receive the first chance to participate in the pro gram. Others may apply and will he considered if there are not enough local applicants.’ Persons who apply " ill be giv en an aptitude test at the em ployment office and if they qual ify will be sent to the vocational education department. Gernon said several had already applied and been tested during the past week. After completing the course trainees must pass a physical exam and present certificates of character reference to lake the state licensing exam for prac tical nurses. Gernon said trainees may re ceive allowances, or subsistence pay. during their training period if they are heads of households or members of certain classifi cations of the unemployed. At No Charge There will be no charge to any individual for any of his training program or application proce dure. The practical nursing progran is part of a nation-wide program set up by the WDTA to provide vocational and on-the-job train ing for unemployed and under i employed persons Unit 4 Fee Fees for Unit 4 pupils for the 1963-64 year have been an nounced by E. H. Mellon, su perintendent. Kindergarten pupils will pay $9,50 for books, supplies, milk and insurance. Insurance is vol untary and the total fee minus the insurance is $8. School insurance covers the child to and from school as well as during the time he is in school. Elementary fees will be 512 or 510.15 minus the insurance. Junior high and high school students will pay fees of 514, covering textbooks, workbooks, supplies, physical education sup plies and insurance. The insur ance fee of 51.85 may be de ducted if desired. ‘Freedom Day' Fete PITTSBURGH (UPI)—Mayor Joseph M. Barr has issued a proclamation designating Aug. 28 as “Freedom Day’’ here. Barr said he drew up the proclamation to help dramatize President Kennedy’s civil rights bill.
