The prevention ot dental decaj i< an important matter and sev eral theotie? vie with each other. The old theory was very sim ple that dental decay was due tu iltt- mvaiuon ol .germs. miu lire tooth enamel. flu* uti'Hrt w-tt- * oil pie ei*». All you had to do was to brush ttie teeth carefully uitn an anti septic dentifrice and kill off the germs. But the question remained, what weakness in the tooth was it that allowed the germs to enter and begin to operate? + # • epiUS question raised the the -1 ory that tooth decay w as largely a question of nutrition of the body, including the teeth, and \hnf all mcay could lx- pre vented by a diet which was ade quate in calcium and vitamin D. ••As h matter of fart.” says Dr. Thurman B. Rice, chief of the bureau of health of Indiana, “good nutrition Is of Importance In developing good, strong teeth, but it la not true that defective nutrition la the cause of carles. “We have emphasis'd the great Importance of large amounts of calcium and lime In the diet. “The fact of the matter Is that there is such a large supply of calcium In the bone* of every lierson that It is nearly Impos sible for him to starve his Iccth in that regard inasmuch as the teeth will requisition from the hones such amounts of calcium / as they need.” Recent research ha* shown that diet has something to do with dental decay in another connection. • • ♦ r PHE germ known technically I as Jaetoharillus acidophilus grow* in the mouth and produces a rather high degree of aridity. It grows in little plaques on the surface of the teeth. These plaques are hard to brush away because they stick very tight and are most likely to he in those places where a toothbrush cannot reach. They develop so much acidity a* to be actually able to etch the enamel and finally cause a cavity. There is no doubt apparently that the eating of much sugar encourages the growth of these germs and in that way indirectly causes dental caries. This too. is going back to a very old theory that too much candy causes decay of the teeth. In order to be safe in the pre vention of dental decay, it is best to watch all fronts, to learn how to brush the teeth and keep the mouth clean, build up the nutrition with plenty of vitamin D and calcium and to visit your dentist and see that the little plaque* in which the lactobacil lus acidophilus takes root are removed at least twice a year.
