LEE A picture of several hundred 1 whistling swans, those most grace- < ful of birds, almost '•disrupted” I the sports department this week, i! When photographer Bill Cross < turned in the picture above, show-; ing part of the flock of from 10,000 < to 15,000 which rested and fed on Belvidere Bay, on the north side of the Clinton River, near Ml. Clemens, the information he of-j sered amazed the boys. “Did you know that swans live 150 to 200 years ?“ asked Mr. Cross. “Do you realize there are 40 or 54) thousand of the birds In the United States and Canada now, but that 15 or 18 years , ago there were only 100? Could but Don't “And that a grown bird has a wingspread of almost six feet; that he’s a very vicious oppo nent and could break bones very ( easily witfi his strength If you tried to tackle him,” informed , Mr. Cross. Cross be<|ime familiar with the habits of Ihe graceful white birds Sunday* April 5, 1942 because he’s lived near Lake St. Clair for years. Seeing the great flocks arrive every spring and fa 111 for a few days' -rest, he asked questions and found the conserva tion department in general, Karl Goff, Oakland County representa tive. in particular, ready to an ; swer. Traced Them Home He learned that, 15 to 18 years ago, thp swan flock was a mere 700. The conservation depart ments of Canada and the United States, alarmed that they might become extinct, stopped all hunt ing of them. The flock still didn’t increase. So they traced the • swans to their homes in the far north couhtry. There it was found that Indian* and Eskimos were using the eggs for dye. An agreement-was made to furnish dye if the natives would leave the eggs alone. Everett Thicker, Detroit conser vation department man. revealed there w-ere two flocks wintered here on the Clinton River, another on the lower Detroit River. Each numbered about 800. fnmhtl Incignia Stamp*. Tha Detroit Time*. Can* Avrnui at Timaa Square, Detroit, Mirh.
