This is an impor tant business rule, which should not be overlooked or neglected. The virtue of prosperity is tem perance. The virtue of adversity is forti tude. Charley Foster is governor of Ohio again. Cheerfulness and temperance are. better medicines than ever came from the drug store. Persevering mediocrity is much more respectable, and of unspeak ably more use than talented in. consistency. Rich people, as a rule, do Dot have large funerals. They are the exclusive property of poor people who wants to be thought rich. ENGUISH FEMALE BiTTERS cures all irregular or excessive monthly secretions, leacorrheea or whites, chiorosis or green sickness, pal pi tation, weak back, etc. There is no great difference be tween man anid man. Superiority depends on the manner in which we profit by the lessons of necessi ty. A Nevada Bishop says there is no Sunday in that State. It is a mining State, and mining is so important and controlling an in terest that religion has taken a back seat. Laxatives and purgatives are used by all men and women, and! by all physicians. One that acts pleasantly and gives satisfaction is much sought for. BAILEY'S SALINE APERIENT is active, pleas ant and efficient. Highly instructing sermons were preached this last week in the Catholic Church, in French and English by Father Laurent, who consented to preach tile Jubi lee to the faithful of our church, said Jubilee having been granted by the Pope to mitigate the perse cution of the church in Europe. We to-day call attention to the advertisement of the PRICKLY ASH BITTERS, which can be' found in another column. These Bitters are made from the purest and best materials, and their tonic and cathartic pr-operties render them superior to all others in disorders of the Stomach, Bowels, &c. Dr. Hammond says the roaring gfound heard when you put the end of your finger in your car is caused by the circulation of the blood in 'your finger. Try a piece .of wood and no sound is hoard. This roaring tells what. busy processes are going on all the time in our bodies, and is probably duo not to the circula tion alone, but to all the vital processes going on in the finger. '1hle painting of th Court House is not quite finished yet. It will present a very respectable a~ppear Sance when thoroughly painted. The windows, of a dusky color heretofore are now green. Our veteran painter, of the army of old Virginia, although hic has the use of but one arma only ; wields the brush with the alacrity of' a Iyoung man. Mr. Putel will soon give the finishing touch to the imposing edifice. THE SOUTH AHEAD.-Ntih Ntihstanding the vast number and quantities of proprietary mcdi cines, that have for years flooded the whole country, the honor for a special remedy has been fairly won by a Southerft s gentleman, whose remedy to-day stands with out a parallel on the American continent. He has achieved a decided victory over nearly all chronic female complaints, which have heretotore proven so diffcult to cure. Cases of ta years stand ing are often cured in a short time, including married and ladies. We allude to t>; . J. P Dromgoole and his pet x-eunidy, ENGLISH FEMALE BITTEnS, flow meeting with Suchi wonderful suc cess. The Cincinnati Commercial thinks it will ble a diffcult if not impossible matter to secure twelve men who are sufficiently uninform ed to qualify them as jurors in Guiteau's case. This suggestion shows the ridiculous position in which technical quibbling lawyers have placed crim~i al trials. Fel ons must noy be tried by the twelve most ignorant and unfitted men to be found in the bailiwick. No man who reads the newspapers and is competent to think is ac cepted to act as a juror in the case of a noted criminal. Intelligent and competent mcn are only al lowed to sit on a jury in smaull cases-so small as not to have re- ceived mention in the press. How absurd! Cotton picking is about over in this Parish. Farmers are now busy taking in their corn. We wWJ soon know whether the pres ent crop will be short or not, as was surmised in the premises. We hope that our former impres sion as regards the shortness o:' corn, may not be realized. Wej believe that we have somewhat been to hasty informing, and po pr-mulgating our opinion in respect to it. We were somewhat erring in stating that the rice crop would be very short. True that in places less benefited by the season failed in a manner but in other sections { there was a compensation, Mr. Allen who runs a thriesher has been steadily at work since two or three weeks, only in one corner. of our Parish, and we hear that; the yield has been better than was first anticipated. Those who have planted potatoes will make. a good crop of this produce, the last rains were a great blessing to them. Let us not despond before it becomes imperatively necessary. Hogs, hogs, we have never seen the like of them, every farmer has plenty of them ; they arc healthy and in good ori'.;r. Peaclitrees are in bloom, a new vegetation has sprung up during the wet spell, and in the Septem ber spring. SQptcniber if every one has noticed, is spring renewed, trees bloom ; the trees throw out leaves and nature assumes its spring robe, we have just emerged from that portion of the year of which allusion is made ; all other plants, cane, oakra, etc., assume a new vegetation. It would be wise for those contemplating roll ing soon to postpone the same nt least two weeks, on account of this vegetation. From ou Exchanges. Morgan City Review : We learn Sfrom a friend that the mother of r i~on. Don. Caffery, of Franklin, t !died last Sunday morning, and 'was buried on the day following. She was a native of North 'Carolina, age' 79J years. it is ,probable an obituary notice of the deceased will be published in our I next. Lafayette Advertise~r Notwith standing the inclemency of the weather there was a respectable attendance at the Catholic Church lnst Monday, on the occasion of the memorial services in honor of Governor Wiltz. An eloquent sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Abbadie, of Grand Cotena, and the usual ceremonies were performed by Rev. Mr. Forge. St. Landry jeinocart : The heaviest rain of tie season, since last winter, fell here Tfhursday afternoon aiid night. The rain began about five o'clock and trained all night, the rain falling at times in torrents ; and it was still raining yesterday morning, with the prospect of lasting all day. Louisiana Capitolian :The long h nkt.d tor rini come down with a will, on last Sunday, to tl~e great delight of everybody, big and little. Empty cisterns were filled with the purest of Adam's Ale and the streets washed of the fine dust that hod become so disagreeble to the promenaders around town. There was rejoicing on all sides, at the cheering spectacle. Opelousas Courier : The excur sion of colored people to New Orleans which wvent down on the Morgan road on Saturday last, was represented from the bayou Baeuf. in the northern part of this parish, down to Morgan City, and is said to have numbered sixteen hundred persons. The excursionists returned on Truesday night, after depositing about $5001 Iin the treasury of the Railroad company. Iberville South :On Monday last the following gentlemen were elected directors of the Mlid Loni- inna Rýiulroad Company :T. J. Bird. 1). C. Mot:-tan, WV. Ganig, C. Wie~k, J. W. Bates, L. Jastremski. N. Wax. Officers of the company were to be elected on TIhur~day las-t. We have no doubt, trom the ability, energy. and financial standing of these gentlemen, that the Mid-Louisiana will soon be an accomplished fact. Houma Courier : rThle Dengue fever is causing a great many naches and pains in our Parish at present. Mr. Chanlcy Daspit informs us, that lie will make about 350 hogs heads of sugar this year. He is making beautiful open kettle sugar, the first made in the Parish this season. W ashington Argus : The first frost of the season made its appearance on Tuesday morning. Those who were fortunate enough to leave their cosy conches before '-Old Sol" got up, felt the need of warmer clothing than they have been in the habit of weariL; for the past few months. Lake Charles Echo : Informa tion reached us yesterday evening that Bill Parish had shot and seriously wounded David Black, last Thursday evening, at a ball near the Sabine river, in this parish. Mr. Slick Black, a brother to the wouded man, in company with Th. Kirkman, left here last night on the eleven o'clock train for the residence of, Mr. Black, who, it is said, is in a very critical condition, having been shot through the bowels. St. Martin Observer : Lary Sunday morning William Johnson c. lodged in jail on charge of larceny, effected his escape al though he was shot at four times by the jailer M. Polyenayd. eie is now at large, and has left for parts unknQw. God speed him. MAL~ARIA.--The worst forms of malaria are found in our close bed. rooms, our filthy', back yards, sta bles, sinks, drains, etc. We make the worst climate known in ordin ary society. Our habits produce more disease than natural malaria. Spite is a little word, but it re presents as strange a jumble of feeling and compound of discords as any pollysilable in the language. THE LATCH-STRINGS OF RHAY EN.-The quaint old colored man man, known to every one around the Central Market as "Rise Up Jerry," will ice missed from the rounds he traveled for years. He is dead. He was living with his daughter on Wilkins street, and had been poorly for a long time. Jerry was past eighty years, and while he had grown feeble for a year or more, no one suspected that death was near. The other day, as he sat in his big rocking chair, and after he had been dozing for half an hour, he asked for his two grandchildren. They were called in and as they h ung about his knce the old man said : "Chill'cn dis ole frame hain't got long to hang on: Ize feelin, powerful queer to-day, an' I want ye clus to me. De little chil'en am dc latch-strings to de gates ob Heaben." In the shade of a plum tree, with the birds singing above, and the breeze tempering the heat, the children nastled down ; and all tthree fell asleep-a sleep in which "the old man's soul passed away so 1quietly that he did not move a hand. When the children awok~ he had long been dead. They had gone with him across the dark valley-walked in the radiance of Heaven's beacon-halted at the golden gates and lifted the latch string. Softly the gates swung open at their childish touch, and the old man had kissed them and 3 passed through.-Detriot Free ',Press. He took six nauseating pills for Sconstipation. They pained, sick )enecl, and griped him all next day. He lost his appetite, lost a day from business and was left quite feeble. His neighbor, who was y also suffering from constipation, e took one dose of Bailey's SALINE APERIENT. It cooled and cleans ed his stomach, moved his bowel, ;,1gently, and the next morning lie felt bright and happy. PAY YOUR TAXES.
