If we are to judge from the way our physicians are kept on the move there must be considerable sickness through out the country. Wednesday morning funeral services were held at the Catholic church for the repose of the soul of the late Dr. P. L. Leblanc who died last July. In the Chevis addition some im prove ments are taking place.' Alcide Le blanc has had the cottage opposite his residence enclosed by a neat fence. Thursday was one of the hottest days of the rear, the thermometer in many places standing at 980 in the shade. The government thermometer marked 930 as the highest point. The Frick work on Womack's new Store on State street is about complete 'and the building makes a neat appear ance. Vernon Caldwell is putting the finishing touches on the front and the job willsoon be ready for the carpen ters. Judge Debaillon .refused to admit Telesmar Marceaux to bail, on the ground that the judgment of the Su preme Court granting him a new trial hadtnot yet become final. Marceaux's attorneys have applied to the Supreme Court for a writ of habeas corpus. It is needless to say the public will await the result of this proceeding with great interest. N. 0. It is reported that Albert Laurents, of Shell Beach, on his recent trip to Texas, found all his vast business en terprises in that locahty progressing ;ery well indeed, particularly the one on which !diss White is acti 7ely men tioned. Fernest Duhon as building a neat shop on his lot on State street, adjoining Kellar's bakery which will soon be ready for occupancy. As the result of brisk competition it is more than probable that the prices of meat will decline some, and to this the erle will not object. The Lost Cause. Address The Lost Cause, 328 Green street, Louisville, Ky. Magnificent Rain. Sunday morning this section was visited by a most magnificent rain of over two inches. Beginning early in the morning about 8:30 o'clock it rain ed vigorously until past noon, then finished off in light showers. From all reports the rain was general, and com ing as it did just in the nick of time after a rather dry spell and north winds it was worth thousands of dollars to the parish, as it makes the young corn a safe crop, and does an immense benefit to the rice, cane and sweet po tato crops. Recently Discovered. Some three years ago the police jury crested the 8th ward by cutting off all of the 6th ward west of the meridian line. At the April election in 1896 the people of the ward voted for ward officers, but as there were some infor mality in this the matter was allowed to drop. Governor Fosters attention was finally secured and he forthwith made the discovery that the 8th ward existed and he commissioned the fol lowing as its officers: W. O. As a member of the Constitutional Convention, I consider it my duty to inform all white male citizens 21 y ears of age to come forward and register as voters under Sec. 5 of the new Consti tution. Under the-new Constitution no white citizen is denied the privilege of voting, but those who cannot read and write and who do not own property of an assessed value of $300.00; must come forward and register before the 31st day of August, 1898. The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Abbeville Building and Loan Association was held Tuesday evening at the rooms of the corpora tion in the Bank of Abbeville building. The meeting was well attended and the report of the auditing committee, which we publish on our first page was received with evident satisfaction. Mr and Mrs Oliver Landry are now boarding with Mrs Elias Broussard. Mrs Jas M Putnam, of New Orleans is visiting her son Emmet and family. Migs Effie Labit has bhen on the sick list this week but has recovered her usual spirits. Mr and Mrs Ophelias Bourque re turned Tuesday evening from their trip to Galveston. Miss Martho Addison returned home Monday from a visit to friends in Bayne and New Iberia. Mrs J E Nettles has gone to north Louisiana on a visit to her mother and will be absent several weeks. Gaston Dutel was busy this week re ceiving the congratulations of his friends upon the new boy at his house. Last Friday Miss Ida Young, accom panied by her brother Sam, left on a visit to relatives in Rayne and Crowley. Mrs Annie T Young, of Rayne, who has been visiting friends here during the past two weeks returned home Thursday. Dr and Mrs Jos A Villep, of Mau riceville, are rejoicing over the birth of a fine boy who will bear the honored name of George Dewey. R H Mills returned home Thursday evening from his trip to Galveston. He stopped off a couple of days in New Iberia to visit ais sister Mrs Doctor Remy. Mrs W A -White and her three chil dren Winnie, Burton and Joycie re turned Wednesday evening from a visit to relatives in Melville, Alexandria and Opelousas. Master Lloyd White entertained a large number of his little friends last Wednesday evening at a tea party given on the lawn at the pretty home of his parents Mr and Mrs W B White. Capt R H Burton and E W Berdine came over Monday night by team from New Iberia, arriving here about 9 o'clock. That is good time having left Galveston about 8 o'clock that morning Camile Sellers, an energetic stock dealer and farmer of the 6th ward- was in town the other day and informs us that he succeeded in saving a cow which had an attack oi charbon, the only case on his place. Mrs Desire J Gauthreaux, wife of the clever conductoron the I & V. return ed home from a visit to New Orleans, whither she went upon a sad. mission, to attend her father Capt Melancon during his last hours. Jas A Petty came over from Crowley last Saturday and returned Monday morning. He has the contract to build a large two story brick warehouse costing $13,000 and is just about finish ing a very tine residence for P J Chap puis. .His friends here will be highly'grati ged to hear that Charles Fontelieu of New Iberia has been appointed by President McKinley, United States Marshal for the Eastern District ot Louisiana. This is a fine position pay ing an annual salary of $3000 besides the perquisites which are handsome. Charlie deserves his good fortune and will no doubt prove a most acceptable official. Ludwig Sokoloski, Jos T Labit, A J Golden and J f Nettles returned Tues day morning by way of New Iberia, after spending a most delightful time on the Gulf and at Last Island. They left the seashore at Cote Blanche, and came overland from Glencoe to New Iberia and thence here by team. The entire party were bronzed by the sun and wind and have evidently had a good time. Miller is making arrange ments for Childrens Day which will take place Sunday, 31st inst. Shade Sutton is holding down the place in good old bachelor's style while his father and sisters are away. Clark Kibbe's house looks quite neat since he has painted it. John Beaure gard made his new place very comfort able. Since last week's news we have had fine rains and the crops are as well as can be expected. in fact cane is exceed ingly fine. Miss Lee Gooch returned from Mor gan City where she has been visiting Rev. S. Beall and wife; she met many nice people and is quite pleased with her visit, W. S. Nilson has been making some very substantial improvements on t~e old Pe ry place all of which adds ve y much to its appearance and when the new refinery goes up it will add a great deal to the business of Perry. It seems that P. L. Terrier is taking the lead at Perry; he has sold a car load of flour in the last two weeks. Mr Terrier is a very agreeable gentlemap in store or out,in fact all our merchants are agreeable gentlemen to deal with. I July 21, 1898. FARtiER. REGiUTRATIOlN.
