Father Larkin announced the opening of a women's retreat beginning Wednesday. with services Thursday and Friday at 7::lp p. nt. The masses for the retreat will be at hand s o'clock. Father Larkin has taken charge of this work and his long experience, practical sense and devotedness assure the ladies of the Holy Name parish of most instructive talks. He announces no flights of oratory. but straight-fromthe-shou Ide r talks of vital importance. Next week he will give the men a Thance to prepare themselves for their Easter duties by preaching to them on subjects peculiarly adapted to them. HOLY NAME SOCIETY. last Sunday this society received communion in a body and, although the number was fairly good, the spirit ual director wants that numberm doubled the next time. The mem bers, led by the vice president, re cited the Litany and then sang Holy Name hymns with manly harmony that surplrised the congregation. The members were surprised at them selves. The officers. .lames Higgins, secretary. Alonzo Bourgeois, treasurer, were on hand, as also many prefects. It was a beautiful sight to see so many earnest men lined up at the conmmu nion rail. Mothers and wives give a hand to the prefects and let us fill up that altar railing three times the next third Sunday. Monday a few of the prefects met. The small number was because of the Knights of Columbus ride on the Sydney. All are expected on the first ,Monday in April. FIRST COMMUNION. A beautiful first communion took place on St. Joseph's Day at the 7 o'clok mass. This was the result of the hard work of Rev. Father Larkin, S. MI., who loves the little ones and who knows so well how to prepare them for this great event in their lives. Hoth bo s and girls formed a beautiful and inspiring tableau as they stood at the altar railing waiting i for their communion. The people showed their appreciation by filling the church and by going to commu nlon themselves in large numbers. The Feast of St. Joseph was, indeed. worthily celebrated. Father Iar-, amie. who witnessed the scene, was both edified and pleased to see such devotion. HOLY NAMLE JUI'NIORS. Talk about your hikes and hiking clube, the lively juniors are on and Saturday morning will see them marching down the lvee of the his torical Mississippil on their way to some mysterious place between Al giers and the sea. They will meet at the ti. N. G. C. Saturday at 9 o'clock, hold their meeting until l9:3 and then the fun begins. After the hike games will be played. Luncrheon will be taken on the trip and all will return about 3 o'clock. good and tired, but full of fresh air and a good time. Every Junior is expected to be on hand. This is only a starter. .More of such excursions will be pulled off in regular order. LENTEN SERVICES. Wednesday. Father Delaire. S. M.; Sunday. Father Cassagne, S. M. Both men are doing exceptionally well and attracting good crowds. Father Cassagne's sermon last Sun day was a masterpiece of oratory. His powerful voice was at its test and the concave arches of Holy Name Church are still quivering ut der its effect. No one hearing the speaker's pathetic appeals could resist him, and it may antely be stated that every man 'iS. ' Miss Murphy, full of life and action. was the subject of constant (ommeqnts of approbation throughout the delight ed audience. Great credit is due to Mrs. Rankin - -and Mr. Barras for their intelligent and effective coaching. And right hare parents and friends of the school it Is not out of place to call your at- t tention to one fact that stood out bold ly in all that work of our boys and gIrls. was the clear, well modulated voices and intelligent interpretatiomi of their lines, which facts are the re- I sult of daily practise in elocution by up to date teachers who know how to I teach both elocution and music. An accomplishment of this kind is of an unquestionable value for any young man or woman in these days. From every point of view this entertainment was a success of which all may well be proud of the actors for the clever work, and the spectators for their gen erous response to a good cause.
