Deceas ed had been indisposed for some "me and his ailment only took for the worse recently, cul minating in h if death. Braud of this town, fie was a member of the local council Knights of Columbus, and that council, Lafourche Conn cil,sènt a delegation to his fune ral at Labadieville,at the Catholic Church, as also to St. Joseph Ca tholic Cemetery, wher? the re mains were laid tc rest. Deceased is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters. Four child ren preceeded him to the grave. S.- PRESIDENT AND SEGRËTARV CLASH President Wilson and Secretary of Staett Lansing have clashed, and the daily press last Saturday flashed the resignation of the Se cretary of State, which resigna tion the Secretary had been ad vised would be acceptable to the President.. It was thought there had been some friction between the two officials since they had been in France. The President took the stand that the Secretary was presuming too much and usurped the prerogatives and constitutional authority vested solely in the Chief Executive. Other: causes—the waste of war, under-pro duction, credit inflation—have added dollars to the cost of the necessities of life, while freight charges have added only cen t s. The average charge for hauling a ton of freight a mile is less than * cent A suit of clothing that sold for $30 before the war was carried 2,265 miles by rail from Chicago to Ix>s Angeles for IbVz cents. Now the freight charge is 22 cents and the suit sells for $50. The cost of the suit ha« increased 20 dollara. The freight on it has increased only centa. Other transportation charges enter into the cost of the finished article—carrying the wool to the mills and the cloth to the tailors—but these othot charges amount to but a few cents more. The $10 pair of shoes that used to sell for $5 goes from the New Eng land factory to the Florida dealer for a freight charge of 5% cents—only one cent more than the pre-war rate. Beef pays only two-thirds of a cent a pound freight from Chicago to New York. American freight rates are the low- ' est in the world.
