THE COLFAX CHRONICLE Absorbed the GRANT PARISH DEMOCRAT May 1, 1909 A Democratic Journal, devoted to Local and 6cneral News, Literature, Scincn, Agriculture, Etc. VOL. XXXV COLFAX, GRANT PARISH, LA., SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 1911 NUMBER 27 Report of the Grand Jury. 7To i/, Ilonor:alh .ludge oft t he 1:3th .ludiirial I.strict I 'ourt iiin aInd for (ira nt I'ari.l, I a.: - We your grand jury for the April term of your honorable court beg leave to submit this our final report: We have examined sixty-one cases, finding thirty-seven true bills, twenty-six true bills being previously reported, and eleven we present herewith: we have found twenty-four no true bills having previously reported twen ty and four we present herewith. We have laid over eight cases which we could not report on owing to absence of witnesses and insufficient evidence. We have had occasion to learn that when homicides occur in some sections of the parish no notice is given the Coroner and no inquest held; we urge that the constables and deputy sheriffs report to the Coroner without de lay when a killing occurs. We have examined the parish jail and find the same fairly well kept, the prisoners expressing themselves as being satisfied with treatment received. From our personal knowledge and information received we beg to submit that the public roads of this parish are generally in a bad condition; we find that the contract system is a failure, the taxes being collected vigorously but practically no work done for the money paid. We think the police jury should investigate the condition of the roads, fix the responsibility upon the contract ors who fail to perform their duty and take such steps'as are neces sary to provide better roads and a better system of working them. We have learned that some merchants keep their stores open on Sunday, and while we did not secure evidence upon which to find bills, we wish to condemn the practice and ask the public to assist in the prosecution of such offenders. Having concluded our labors we beg to be discharged. R. R. JETER, Foreman. Prof. Roy Praises the Verda Agricul tural School. Verda, La., April 10, 1911. Editor C'olfax ('hronicl: The Agricultural High School of Verda was visited and closely inspected to-day by Prof. V. L. Roy, supervisor of agricultural schools and organizer of the boy's corn clubs of the State. He seemed to be very much pleased with the work of the high school, as well as the agricultural work, and especially was he pleased with the sciences of the school. He stated that the school farm was the best fenced one in the State, and that the barn ranks among the best, of which there were only about three others as good as the Verda barn. The condition of the soil seem ed to please him very much, as everything was growing well where stumps were once very plentiful. This condition of af fairs seemed to gratify him very much. He is planning to bring Prof. Dodson here sometime in May, to conduct an agricultural insti tute for three or four days in be half of the farmers as well as the school. He said: "I do not in tend to do this for any other school in the State, but I am much interested in the work of this school, since I see the prin cipal is so much interested in the agricultural work. I shall lend a helping hand in every way possible to promote the work of the school, as I feel that the ben efits of this school will be far reaching. It seems to me that all boys who contemplate taking an agricultural course ought to be here instead of some central school pursuing only the literary course. " Now, that is what I call a nice send off for our school. A PATRON. Mrs. McKnight's Donation to the M. E. Church, South. Colfax, La., April 11, 1911.
