The first of the series of annual fairs, wjhieh the East Carroll Fair Associa tion expect to hold every fall hereafter, came off yesterday and the day before. On account of the extreme cold weather, as mtany could not attend as would bave liked; nevertheless a con siderable crowd of visitors were on hand yesterday, when the fair opened formally, with an address by Hon. Jos. E. Ransdell. The exhibits of live stock and poultry were very good indeed, and we are sorry that more of our planters did not interest themselves and send in exhibits. The success of the fair is due in a great measure to Messrs. Constant, Graham. Hope and Taylor, of the second w:,rd. and Messrs. Phil McGuire anit K. L. hill, of Providence, The ex. hibitions were very flue of their kind and will serve as a stimulus to others to do the same next year. Owing to the winter season beirg on we con sider the first fair a success, Next week we will give a more de tailed description of the exhibits, and a list of the contributors. We have a lirst class location for the fair grounds, a good grand stand, a line race course and good, substantial out-houses. Next year let the planters all join in and make these annual ex hibits a credit to our people. We con gratulate the gentlemen who have so far interested themselves on their suc cess. The Masonic Lodge had a grand banquet last Wednesday in their lodge room, to which a considerable number of outsiders were invited. We understand that plates were set for seventy odd guests, and that the spread was excellent. Addresses were made by Jnule Wyly and Mr. J C. Bass. The "following officers were elected: J. C. Base, W. M ; R L Ilill, S W; 1i F. Peck, J. W.; C. 11. E-elly, Sect'y ; P. McGuiire, Tres..; W. A Blounut, Tiler; b. M Frauklin, S. ) ; Max Levy, J. D. THE COTTON COMPRESS AND WAIlEHOUSE BUSINESS. i Il tile early part of the week 11 J.( WV. T'ooke, cashier of the Lake Prvi-i deuce Batik, was talkinig to us satiut the mnatiter itl whiith the cotton byai- ' tnes was conducted in Arcadia, Breen-; ville parish, his former homeo. Very different from our system over here, the cotton raised lu Bienville parish isa gituned, compressed and sold right in h Arcadia, and hardly aty commission business is done in New Orleans. In ui Arcadia the farmer takes his cotton to d the Levy Compress and Warehouse tl Conipany to be compressed. If he wants to borrow Imouey on it, he call d deposit it with the company, after lak- a ing out an insurance policy. The n Warehouse Coempatny gives him a re ceipt for his cotton, say 20 tLales lie is then takes tile insurantce policy, with N the Warehotse receipt attached thcre- Ili to, and presents It to the bank If cot ton is bringing. say $35 per bale, he catn borrow ont the face of the ittsur- rc anice policy atd the stotrage receipt h, about $30 per hale, or $600 on a total at value of $700 or more. With tihs mltoney tile lfar!mer pays his year's deb's, settles up his accoutt and transacis K his business generally right in Icis own tl. town. Under this system lie pa's no is colnmissiolls to-cottonl htouses ill New OIleans atnd tno storage; lie suffers no c loss ill weight asd he saves a lnumbher c of Inllcidental expenlses that oltherwise lie would have to pay. Besiites, he st:perintendd the stlling of-his ,iown CO Ion. M W\ co,l idst tie i's -y-etit a zr('eat c It L venieice to thlie people On the rtit,i lIoaever, all bustis,'e- is dotie thrtough New OrleatIs. NMr. Tl'ooke sa. s that it a storage .nrehout-e were established ,i here, where people could depo.sit their at cottonl and draw iotne oil it, it would lesseni very materiallyv the nmitountt of coltlissioon business IIQW done in this parish, and that the Bantk would et. courage buyers to come here. lie says - that ill Btenville parish, where fiften years ago business was done almoist entirely withl New Otlealns, there are po not over 25 bhales out of 15.000-hipled to the city, and that people never think N of borrowing mnotley from commission - nierehauts out of the parish. This is a proposition we hope our St pep!le will leIok into. We have the A bank where the producer camn borrow what money lie needs. There is no et reason why we could not have the stor- ttl age warehouse, where the producer j could deposit his cotton, have it in. Lt sured, take a warehouse receipt, go to pt the bank and get money on it, J. on indorsing it to the bank. Of te course, jt would take some time to to break av~sr from the commission sys- ar lei as nottw carried on through New at Orleans, atid uch counditions will i never be done away with entirely; but - a great many small farmers would gradually gel out of the old rut into the new one, and If things could work 8t as smoothely here as in Bienville p rish. thousauds of dollars would ex- m change hands right here in Lake Provi. t deuce tbat otherwise go away. i One step leads to another. Energy P, is generally regarded, and, if expend.) ed in the right direction, Is arlnost i- b variably remUnerated. We hope that t l nsome move will be taken in this diree.
