THE CLARION Official Journal of the Parish of St. Landry. Official Journal of the City of Opelousas. Of-iclal Journal of the Parish School Board. THE O GEE'S COMPLETION. Event Appropriately Celebrated by Towns Along Route Of New Road. The celebration of the completion of the Opelousas, Gulf & Northeast ern Railroad, which took place last Monday night and " entire day Tuesday, was marked, by festivities, good cheer and cone pndable entente cordial between the people of the towns connected. The celebration began at ,.Crowley Monday night. There a nu) nber of people from the different towlrs along the road assembled and feaf ;ed and celebrated with Crowley as tl~e host. Several from Opelousas attended, and all give rosy report of the Crowley affair. Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock the excursion left Crowley, and took up the people of the different towns as it went along, each town being rep resented by a coach. At Rayne. Mr. John Taylor, in behalf of the people of Rayne, presented a gold-headed ebony cane to Hon. Thos. H. Lewis, bearing the incription: "Presented to Thomas H. Lewis, by his friends in Rayne, La., completion of Opelou sas, Gulf & Northeastern Railroad, Oct. 1, 1907." When the train reached Church Point another coach of people was taken on, together with the J. Y. Sanders Band of that town. The Rice City Band of Crowley was also on the train, and both bands furnish ed excellent music during the voyage. At Opelousas a large crowd got on the home coach, which had been beautifully decorated by the ladies of the Civic League. In fact each town had decorated the coach repre senting it. Here the train remained a half hour, during which time Sheriff Swords, on behalf of the people of Opelousas, presented Mr. Thos. H. Lewis with a beautifully designed "Loving Cup," bearing the following inscription: "To Thos. H. Lewis, first President of the 0. G. & N. E. R., in token of love and esteem." Mr. Lewis replied feelingly to both presentations. The train went on to Melville, where a short stop of 40 minutes was made, after which it started on its return trip, stopping at Second Lake, where the excursionists were the guests of the Opelousas Rod & Gun Club, and where a delicious courtbul lion prepared under the expert direc tion of Messrs. John M. Mornhinveg and Sidney L. Hebrard was enjoyed. After bringing the Melville people back home, the train came back and went on to Crowley, dropping the people as they reached their respec tive towns. The entire affair was hugely suc cessful and expertly managed. The officers of the road who were in charge-Messrs. Harry Flanders, General Superintendent, and J. W. Jordon, General Passenger and Freight Agent-as usual proved per fect hosts. These gentlemen have ingratiated themselves in the esteem of the community, both as men and officials. CIVIC LEAGUE. Mrs. Anderson Writes of Last Saturday's Meeting. Many enthusiastic and working members of the League responded to the call last Saturday afternoon, to arrange matters for the big ex cursion over the O'Gee, and whilst planning for that, "killed two birds with one stone," and made provision for a grand Fete Champetre and Dance, to be given on Tuesday, Octo ber the fifteenth, to raise funds for the Park, which will one day blossom in our midst, "a thing of beauty and joy forever"-a spot where childhood's merry laugh, and joyous spirits will have free vent-a spot whose shady nooks, and meandering streams, will tempt the aged heart to linger there, and find solace for its care. Yes, Opelousas needs this Park her other needs are also great. Whilst on this subject, let me appeal, oh, women! to your hest attributes. You realize that "cleanliness is akin to Godliness," yet when you look around your grass-grown streets, and other surroundings lacking beauty and harmony, surely a feeling of dis gust must overcome you, and a de sire to wipe out these stains which mar the beauty of your grand old town, take possession, and prompt you to go forward, and add your mite to the general whole, and so doing, add a new lustre to its picturesque loveliness. j Come forward then, oh ye Civic &Leaguers! Join hands and pledge eifoureselves to aid in this great work, pand let it be your pride to point with Kjtriumph to the new Opelousas, which ý will stand in the ages to come a bril liant monument of woman's virork. MRS. MILLER ANDERSON. To save a few paltry dollars you will burden your wife with a cheap 1machine that will wear her life away stand cost you many times, the differ ence in medicine-and perhaps her fe. Get the best. What is the JUne1st? But one answer-SINGER. "R. Carter, Opelousas. oct5tf FATAL BILLET B6lIW. Sunset Policeman Kills Citizen In Making Arrest. A deplorable tragedy occurred in Sunset, this parish, on last Tuesday, in which a citizen of that town lost his life, and another is in serious trouble. Gerazime Levergne lived with his family about a mile from Sunset, and on Tuesday went to town and imbibed too freely. While intoxicated he be came boisterous, and leaving the saloon went into the store of Marius Smith, where he continued the dis turbance. The town marshal, Carlisle Jordan, heard the noige of the drunken map. -'d went to ar st him, and in ,'ectin.h~ arre~struck him on the head with h -biret. Lavergne w ~-'jailed, ana iit even ing released. He went home, but soon it was necessary to call in a physician, and the unfortunate man kept getting worse until Wednesday morning he died. d, The Sheriff' was iotifid, and in turn the parish Coroner, and both officers left for the scene Wednesday morning. In the meantime Jordan boarded the noon train at Sunset and came here and surrendered. The Coroner impanelled a jury, and an autopsy held over the body caused the jury to return a verdict that de ceased had come to his death by a blow struck by Carlisle Jordan, the blow having produced concussion of the brain. Thursday morning bail in the amount of $500 was fixed for the release of Jordan, which he promptly furnished. Lavergne was deformed from birth, having both hands turned in at the wrist. Jordan is also a sick man, and when he furnished bail Thursday was on the verge of collapsing. He is weak and nervous, and had- to be assisted in putting on his coat. Lavergne is a man of family, and leaves a wife and several children. HORRIBLE DEATH. Gustave Chachere Burned to Death at Jennings Oil Field. Gustave Chachere, until some years back a resident of Opelousas, where he was born and remained until ma ture manhood, met with a horrible death at Evangeline, Acadia parish, the Jennings Oil Field. It appears that on Sunday he was cooking a gumbo on a high range in the oil field, and in some manner the range was tilted, upturning the pot of hot gumbo on the unfortunate man. His face and body were literally cook ed, but it was- not believed that the accident would prove fatal. He was brought to a hotel, where medical aid at once attended him, and on Monday his brother, Dr. Homer Chachere, of Crowley, heard of his brother's mis fortune and went to see him. He was suffering intensely, and that evening succumbed. The news reached his brother, Mr. Robert Chachere, in Opelousas Mon day soon after his death, and pre parations were made for the funeral. The corpse arrived on Tuesday noon's train, and the funeral took place from the Catholic church. Interment in the Catholic cemetery. A large con course of relatives and friends follow ed the remains to its last resting place. Mr. Chachere was 46 years old, and leaves no family. Announcement. Mr. F. H. E. STOKES. Our Woman's Foreign Missionary Society is in mourning over the death of our' beloved brother, Mr. F. E. Stokes. He was our senior honorary mem ber. We shall miss him (!) so sadly, for after his conversion he loved to attend the meetings and gladly per formed any duty assigned him. Once he did not believe in missions, but after that glorious first Sunday in July, 1906, when the "Lord cama down his soul to greet, And glory crowned the mercy seat;" when he got a vision of Calvary, and by faith in the blood of the Lamb, his sins were washed away, the joy was so real, so blessed, he wished for ten thousand tongues with which he might praise the Redeemer, who had saved him and made him his child. Since that day he has been a changed man, and has swept like a blazing light on to the close of his earthly career. Always a sunny, kind hearted friend, religion made him the polished Christ ian, to work while here, and then go home to shine in the courts of heaven. After his conversion his one regret was that he had so long neglected to give his heart to God, and we have seen him, while the tears rolled down his cheeks and his voice all tremulous with emotion, exhort sinners to give God their hearts Now, and not delay so long as he did. He was constantly dwelling on the goodness of God in saving him, tho' he came so late. It was a privilege to be in his sick room, and hear him talk of the wonderful grace that saves all who will come unto Christ, of all that God has been to him in his terrible sufferings, to hear the shout of tri umph over death, hell and the grave, and see the faith of that light in the dear face only God can give. He said to a friend: "0, it is worth ten thousand times ten thousands worlds like this to know that Jesus saves!" Yes it is, dear friends; this life is so short even though we may live our three score years and ten, "yet is there strength, labor and sorrow," the Psalmist says, for we are soon cut off and fly away to the place for which we have prepared ourselves. Sadly we say Goodbye to our brother, and go back to our Society, to close up the broken circle, and press onward with renewed zeal to carry on the great work, until our King shall look down and say, "It is enough, come up higher!" Then with joy will we lay our armor down and join in the glad shouts of praises to "Him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father, to the glory and dominion forever. Amen!" "Did you ever think as the hearse drives by That it won't be long until you and I Go riding in that big plumed hack, And never remember of coming back?" The hearse is coming for all of us; so let us "prepare to meet our God." MRS. PAUL FOSTER. Printer Wanted. Good all-round man, one who pre fers work to booze.
