THE CLARION Officlal Journal of the Parish of St. Landry Ofical Journal of the City of Opelousas Official Journal of the Parish School Board "NO MOTHER TO GUIDE HER" MADE HIT OF THE SEASON Manager Loeb Put On A Praiseworthy Attrac. tnlo, Which Will be Followed By Othar Star-Companies. "No Mother to Guide Her," which was rendered at Sandoz's Opera House last Tuesday night with Miss Alma Hearn in the star role, was easily so far the best thing put on this season. The house was not as large as it should have been, partly due, doubt less, to the inferior shows which pre ceded it. Manager Loeb, however, tells us that he has about cleaned his sheet of bum shows, and that those billed for the future are worthy of patronage. THE BLACK HAND TO-NIGHT. "The Hand Of Death," at the Opera House to-night, should draw a large house. It is a play taken from life, founded on facts, dealing with the fearful and muderous workings of the cruel and heartless society known as the "Black Hand," It is replete with sensational scenes and thrilling cli maxes. The kidnaping scene, the den scene, Italian quarter, tomb in St. Louis Cemetery, and other scenes connected with the kidnaping and murder of Walter Lamana in New Or leans are said to be faithfully de picted by strong actors. The company is headed by the "Peerless English Actress," Miss Ina Lehr, supported by Miss Elizabeth Marsh, late of the Brown-Barry Stock Co.; Miss Ruth Sullivan, late of Rus sells Comedians; Miss Edna Constance, late of Human Hearts Co.; Miss Marie Wells, late of "As Told In the Hills" Co.; J. C. Willams, late of "Still Alarm," Co.; Geo. Clark, late "Under Southern Skies;" W. S. Hurley, late Fairyland Stock Co.; Thomas Crowley, late Orpheum Circuit; Fred Stempel, late "King's Musketeers;" Albert Ap plegate, late Trouedale Stock Co.; Baby Reynor, playing part of kidnaped child. "TOO RICH TO MARRY." Manager Loeb announces, with his strong recommendation, the appear ance of Raymond Teal's big company of 22 people in "Too Rich to Marry," which will be rendered here one night next week. This company has just played Shreveport and Baton Rouge, and other cites where it won the apprecia tion of the public and flattering com ment from the press. During the action of the company many musical numbers and specialties are introduced, the famous Rehn's Comedy Sketch Team, and the Orpheus Comedy Four, America's Premier Sing ing Comedians, being with it. NEliRO SHOT DOWN IN ROAD NEAR VILLE PLATTE. John Thomas the Victim of Cold.Blooded Assas. slatlon While On His Way Home.--Charged to Drunken White Men. Johnny Thomas is a negro raised by Ernest Soileau, in l'Anse Blen, a few miles from the village of Ville Platte. He is known by both white and black in that section as a well behaved, law-abiding darkey, and has been a good field hand all his life. On last Sunday night he and his brother were traveling the public road in the vicinity of Ville Platte, and suddenly came across three white men whp had gotten off of their horses and were drinking out of a bottle. As the negroes passed the white men, the latter hailed them, but the darkies continued. As they (the negroes) turned into a side road they heard the men coming behind them, whooping and shooting in their direction. Johnny's brother jumped from his horse and made an adjoin ing cotton field, but Johnny whipped up his horse and tried to outfleet the pursurers. He received five bullets in his back, and fell from his horse dead. This is substantially the story of Johnny's brother, as told to us. The sheriff and his deputies imme diately repaired to the scene of the crime, upon being informed of it, but so far have been unable to ferret out the dastardly murder. The dead man's brother is in jail here, having been incarcerated in the hopes of getting information which it is thought he knows as to the guilty parties. If he knows who killed his brother, he has not yet told, and it is believed that he is afraid to do so. A bottle of whiskey, bought at a Ville Platte saloon, was thrown at the fleeing negro by the murderers. and this is held as a clew. Eunice Sanders Meeting. Eunice is prepared to entertain the multitude that will attend the San ders Rally there on next Saturday, October 26. It is proposed to give an excursion from all points, if same can be ob tained from the railroads. A commit tee is now negotiating with the Ope lousas, Gulf & Northeastern and Fris co roads, by which an excursion will be run from Crowley to Opelousas over the O. Gee tracks and from Opelousas to Eunice over the Frisco tracks. REGISTIRATION OF VOfERS OPENS NEXT MONDAY Registrar Dossmann Anxious to Give Every Voter in Parish An Opportunityto Quality to Vote in The Primary. Although it is doubtful if it is the duty of Registrar Dossmann to open the registration office at this time in fact it is questionable that the primary law provides for any registra tion at all for the paimary-he will commence the registration of voters on next Monday, the 21st, and will probably continue the office open un til ten days before the primary (an other dubious point, as lawyers say that it conflicts with the article of the Constitution with says that reg istration should close 30 days before an election). Mr. Dossmann has not fixed his dates on which he will go to the country districts, but will do so later on, when Gov. Blanchard will have appointed the clerk of registration. It is under stood that the clerk will be selected from the Wilkinson ranks. This registration is for persons who have attained the age 21 years since the last registration, and those who might have failed to qualify in the past. Those who registered at the last registration will not have to register again. SWORDS CALLS LEAiUE TO MEET TUESDAY NliHT.
