THE HOLY CITY MONDAYS Play that Pleased the People of Opelousas Some Years Ago Is Billed to Return. One of the best performances ever in Opelousas was the production of that great Drama, "The Holy City," a few years ago. Theatre-goers have not forgotten it, and will be glad to hail its return, which is billed to occur next Monday night, the 14th. Most striking effective of all the religious dramas ever presented is "The Holy City," Clarence Bennett's powerful and interesting play pictures with vivid strength .and masterly power the scenes and incidents lead ing up to the betrayal of the Master of Judas. The dance of Salome, the daugh ter of Herodias, before King Herod, is shown as is her successful plea for the head of the great preacher. After John's death events move with great rapidity and the plotting and scheming of the high priest and the Pharisees with Herod are depicted as well as the giving of the thirty pieces of silver to Judas, who prom ised to betray Jesus into the hands of his enemies. The presence of Jesus is, of course, only suggested, but so cleverly is this done that the spectator seems carried back two thousand years and fancies himself an actual witness of the great scenes which accompanied the enactment of the greatest tragedy in the history of the world. Other scenes depict the convulsion of nature at the moment of the cru cifixion, the suicide of the remorse ful Judas and the bringing of the glad tidings of the resurrection. The entire play is a drama of simple majesty and wonderful interest and is presented by a company of sterling players. A PLUCKY COMMUNITY. ":Wee'i al d ndt n1':sted, lat Going to Work With A Vim that Wii: Win. The farmers of Boyce will never starve. They appreciate the resourceful ness that~their country affords, and instead of whining calamity, they have gone to work to win. at, ow blessed is a country with Mich farmers! The Alexandria Town-Talk, in speaking of the pluck of the Boyce farmers, says: The little town of Boyce is one of our best and nearest neighbors. It suffered more from the flood than any of the towns adjacent to Alexan °dria; but it complains less and keeps • a good stiff upper lip better than some of the people hereabouts. Some of the Boyce merchants tell us "that business is pretty good, and we hear of several planters who are go ing to try cotton again on a reduced acreage; and moreover that they do not fear the weevil. One far mer had a splendid crop last year on two hundred acres, secured by planting early varieties and intense cultivation with the weevil beaten, but ruined by the flood. He plants again this year. Another planter tried a little patch of seven acres under the same process of cultivation and raised eight bales of cotton on the patch. "Boyce with its pluck and hope ulness deserves prosperity next year, nd we believe it is coming to her." THE BANNER OBJECTS, Says Buson Should Not be Permltted to Carry the Courthouse In Vest Pocket. Commenting upon the Clarion's mortion of the innocent remarks of Messrs. W. T. Morris and Elias Fon tenot to the effect, the first, that he wanted to know from Gurley whether he (Duson) was certain of the court house for Mamou, the second of Mr. Fontenot that he (Mr. Fontenot) thought that he was already suf ficiently taxed without inviting anoth er tax occasioned by the creation of the parish of Evangeline, our good friend, Bailey, of the Ville Platte Evangeline Banner, whips out his carving knife for Curley Duson, who is booming Mamou town. It d4tclaims Duson's ability to cart4 ae courthouse around in his vest .et, or rather objects to the expre presumption that he does walk a nad with the white edifice of the new parish securely lodged about his person. Chicot. Miss Elvinor Fontenot, daughter of Hon. M. L. Fontenot, spent several days in town last week. H. L. Erlich, Sr., H. L. Erlich, Jr., and Judge Henry Singleton, went to Opelousas on the Rock Island on Sun day evening. With Ville Platte, Eunice and Ma mou as candidates for the courthouse of proposed Evangeline, and Pine Prairie as a dark horse, things will be pretty lively next spring-Eh, Paulin, what do you think about it? Mr. Ed. L. Clark has opened a livery stable at Pine Prairie, and Henry Glaze a hotel. We return thanks to our neighbor, Mr. John O'Neal, for a mess of fine spare ribs. Call again, neighbor. Mr. Webb Quirk, of Washington, was here Friday, buying beef cattle. L. J. Derbes took a trip to Mamou Thursday. Hon. J. C. Murray paid a visit to Pine Prairie on Friday. Hon. Pat Donaby, the "Old Re liable," paid us a visit Friday, and re ports Pine Prairie on a boom. Hon. H. D. Courtney sent us some of the finest turnips and Irish pota toes of the season, for which he has our thanks. With such good things as the above; with plenty of good fat hog meat, yam potatoes and syrup, most of the Cbicot people live like lords during the winter season. Pay your poll taxes before Janu ary 1st, or else you can not vote for the courthouse of Evangeline in the 6th ward, should the parish be divided. The Rock Island Railroad had a wreck above Turkey Creek last Fri day. No one was hurt, but traffic was stopped for several hours. The battle cry is "On to Mamou," the future town, and no doubt the parish seat of Evangeline, if the par ish is divided. Buy a lot December 21st, 1908. The conductor of the Rock Island Railroad, in passing Mamou, the "Future Great," informed ye scribe that the first car through to New Orleans on that road will be called "Evangeline:" CHICOT.
