DELAYS TRAFFIC SWITCH 'ENGINE DERAILED ON INCLINE AT ANCHORAGE ON LAST MONDAY A big switch engine was derailed on the river incline of the Gulf Coast Lines at Anchorage last Monday, go ing deep in the river mud, and as a consequence the westbound passenger train, due in Opelousas at 12:45 p. m., was several hours late. It required the work of the wrecking crew and the big crane to lift the monster from its rest ing place. and clearng the tracks so that trains could be placed on the transfer steamer. The work, how ever, was completed in record time and the eastbound train, No. 4, went through to New Orleans on time. -J. J. Price, formerly of this city but now managing the Miller Broth ers Motor Company branch at Alex andria, was a business visitor here on last Tuesday. -Walter Duckworth,one of the lead ing farmers of Upper Waxia, was in Opelousas both Monday and Tuesday. -Col. C. W. Krotz, mayor of Krotz Springs, was here the first of the week In the interest of the proposed high way from Port Barre to his town. Judge G. R. Baillio, Tom McCaffery an-d Tom Cooke of Washington were business visitors to Opelousas on last Monday. -M. G. Wilkins, former St. Landri an but for many years past a resident t -Crowley, was here last Saturday and Sunday, attendng to business and incidentally g ecting old friends. Mayer returned last Sunday from an extended trip to New Orlean and Birmingham, Ala., in the interest of the Anti-Tuberculosis League, with which body he is offi cially connectcd. -Henderson B. Taylor, prominent citizen of Waxia, was here Monday on business. This was his first trip to Opelousas in almost four years. De spite Mr. Taylor's age of nearly seven ty-eigth, and the further fact that he saw some very active service in the Virginia campaigns as a soldier in General Lee's army, he looks hale and as spry at a two-year-old and still enjoys an occasional deer hunt in the big woods,following the hounds on his horse with the best of the younger boys, and so far as his ability to draw a deadly bead on the fleeing deer- well, his old friends know that he's as accurate a shot as he was in the good ld 1days of the long ago. MRS. J. J. BEARD, SR. Died, at the home of her daughter, on Bayou Waxia, February 3, 1919, Mrs. Octavie Beard, nee Fogleman. She was one of the old landmarks of that neighborhood and a member of the Methodist Church, having joined early in life. Her faith never waver ed, and she lived the life of a true Christian. She was a kind, loving mother and a faithful friend. May God in His mercy comfort and sustain her children in their loss. She leaves three children, C. F. Woods, J. J. Beard, Jr., and Mrs. R.
