USE FOR "TANKS;' IN PEACE TIME French Have Put Frightfully War Ma chines to a Variety of Highly Useful Occupations The French appear to be ahead of us in finding a use for tanks in peace times. A considerable number of French tanks which are comparatively small sized are now employed for transport purposes about the yards of large industrial works; others are us ed as farm tractors, while the large tanks are replacing horses for traction along the wide paths of the great French canals. The latest and perhaps the most re found for these machines is in connec markable employment which has been tion with mountain climbing for tour its. For htis purpose the armor and of course all the fighting apparatus of the tank are removed and a carriage or superstructure capable of carrying from ten to twenty passengers added. The seating is either arranged longitu dinally or crosswise. Very steep grades can be taken, while the machines eas ily cross small streams and make their way through brushwood, tall grass and over the roughest roads. She is one of the star members of a woman's class at the athletic club and long has been re-" garded as a remarkably clever ama teur boxer. Recently she encountered a burglar In her home. Instead of running from the house, screaming for the police, she took the situation in her own hands. "Mr. Burglar, you may put up your hands and get ready for what probably will be the very worst lick ing you ever had." With this warn ing she stepped in with lightning right and left swings to the head. The burglar was groggy in a few seconds. He tried ineffectively 'o guard against the rain of blows. Finally, with a wicked uppercut to the point of the jaw, Mrs. Statler knocked out the burglar. IHe had not come to when the po lice loaded him in a patrol wagon and took him to a police station. Rigidly Exclude Fresh Air Europeans do not like fresh air, writes Theodore Roosevelt in Average Americans. They feel a good deal like the gentleman in Stephen Lea cock's story who said he liked fresh air, and believed you should open the windows and get in all you could. Then you should shut the windows and keep it there. It would keep for years. The beds also are rather re markable. They are generally fitted with feather mattresses, and feather quilts. Very oftei they are arranged in a niche in the wall like a closet, and have two doors, which the aver age Europen, atfer getting into, the bed, closes, thereby rendering it about as airy and well well ventilated as a coffin. I remember my own. billet in one of the towns where we sttpped. As I was commanding officer, it was one of the best and was reasonably warm. It was warm because the barnyard was next door, literally in the next room, as all that separated me from a cow was a light deal door 1ty the side of the bed. The .*ow was tied to the door. When the cow slept I slept; but if the cow passed a rest less night I had all the opportunity I needed to think over my past sins and future plans. In another town an excellent billet, was not used by the officers because over the bed rwere hung photographs of all the various persons who had died in the house, taken wJile they lay in that be'd. -i n na h J.
