Per haps $2 a year taken off the taxes of the hundred million people of the Un ited States. And a dozen or two battle ships scrapped means nothing in view of the development of the airplane and the submarine. The chemists and av iators are now the fighters, of the com ing battles. Clouds of poison gas can be droppel from the sky and whole cit ies wiped out. This scares some, and a law is to be enacted that civilians cannot be attacked. That was a tacit law in the last war, yet devastated France and Belgium point to the folly of agreements superseding economic in terests. A man's backbone should be long enough to keep him from sitting down when he onght to be on his feet, and strong enough to keep him on his feet when he gets there.—Exchange, ROSEPINE NOTES %— Everyone at school has been extreme ly busy the past week with mid-term tests. Wednesday, Thursday, and Fri day were devoted exclusively to exam inations. A half-day was given to each examination and when through the pupils were allowed to go home. The eleventh grade boys went hunt ing Thursday afternoon and had the good luck to get one bird. The elev enth grade girls and the entire eighth grade remained at home Thursday, as there was no examination for them on that day. All the teachers were groaning under their heavy load of papers which have to be graded. We kids think it hard to take a test, but I presume if we had those stacks of pa pers to correct, we would be nearly killed. ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ Miss Wilson, the State Poultry De monstration Agent; Miss Gleason, the District Club Demonstration Agent; and Miss LeFevre, the Parish Club Demonstration Agent, were visitors at our school last week. ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ From some mysterious cause, the de pot and Mr. Furgeson's store at Pick ering were both burned Thursday night. ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ A new commissary building is being built at Neame in place of the old one, which was destroyed by fire some time »go. * ¥ e t Miss Tera Williams was home on a visit Sunday. ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell have just re turned from a car-trip to Lake Charles, and the neighboring towns.
