The bill pre sented by this strong, little company of players was enhanced by the pre sentation of the famous Theda Bara in a picturization of "The Serpent." Pleased to the core with both the spoken drama presented and the pic ture play of the evening, the crowds !who witnessed these performances from six until eleven o'clock were outspoken in their favorable com ments on the double feature enter ! taüunent. • I The Smith Company in ' their i forceful and intensely interesting playlet departed from the ordinary j in the nature and manner of their S entertainment. With a vehicle seem ingly expressly created for their in dividual parts the little company of big actors and actresses held the au dience enthralled from curtain to curtain of their twenty minute act. No violent, blood and thunder act ing for these artists, but a gripping story told in a tense and impressive manner that leaves their auditors gasping at their message and its impressive delivery. Last night began a four night's engagement for the Siebert Smith Company at the Opera House. Each succeeding night of their stay they will present these feature playlets, and, if one is a fair critic of drama tic art, these playlets justify one's at tending every performance. Satur day and Sunday the company will give matinee performances as well as evening. At every performance, Manager Loeb will continue his us ual picture programs, the excellence of which can not be questioned by the most severe critc. The Boy, or The Hog For some weeks now farmers all over the states and counties have been flocking to the local fairs, some to exhibit to the public the re sults of their efforts and others to see and observe and profit by the results achieved by their fellows. Among the many attractions to be seen at these fairs is the inevit able big fat hog. His hogship usually tips the beam around one thousand pounds and we stand and marvel at the labor and patience it must have required to develop such swinich perfection. Then if we are thinking men our thoughts will probably pass on to wonder if the owner of such a mar vel has sons of his own, and as to how great an effort he is making to develop them to the highest type to which they are capable of attaining. The hog's owner has been careful to eliminate from its progenitors all that would tend to take from its full and complete development, Has he been just as careful to weed out his own life habils and traits of char acter that would militate against the development of his son? Often we have seen a boy succeed in life despite the shortcomings of a derelict father, and we have con tended ourselves with the simple re mark that the boy is a great im provement on the father. The tri bute is weak and paltry. Little do we reck of the flight of the boy has waged in order to rise above his sur roundings and overcome his handi caps. Environment is mighty for good or evil. The greatest blessing a boy can have is parents who can point out and guide him towards higher things—higher heights even those to which they have attained. At the risk of seeming to preach we wish to say to the fathers of this section that when you look upon the big hog you have seen the ultimate. Nothing fur ther is obtainable unless, possibly it be a little more of the same porcine perfection. Bue when you look upon your small son, how little you can see of the limitless possibilities for good and ill that lie in that s®» mind and heart, and how your car* of him is going to mould his 1* * ® almost whatever you may wi make it! . Why not think less of the big hog and more of the small boy. CARNIVAL COMPANY HERE Mr. J. A.
