S. at CHARIVARI PARTY Saturday ' About nine o'clock evening the quiet and normally j peaceful conditions of North Feder- ' al Avenue were shattered into a ! million atoms of discordant sound j waves as a result of a visit by a charivari party which was planned ' and carried out by friends and ! neighbors of the popular newly-! weds, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kurzweg, of After the noisy salute, Mr. and Mrs. Kurzweg so far forgave the dis turbers that they invited them into their beautiful cottage home and heaped coals of fire upon their heads by showering upon them fruit punch divine and cakes deli cious. The bride and groom were toasted and other members of the party were roasted, and music, wit j and laughter blended delightfully during the short hour the host and hostess entertained their uninvited guests. To show their further ap preciation of the entertainment supplied them, the charivari party gave a parting salute upon their various sound-producers and with renewed expressions of congratula tion and best wishes, disbanded. Mr. Kurzweg, who recently wed ed Miss Mary Louise Geneaux of d Jeanerette, is manager of the St. ! Mary Wholesale Grocery Company of this cit^ His exceptional ability as a business man has gone far to ward making his company probably one of the largest dividend-paying concerns in South Louisiana. Mrs. Kurzweg is in every way fitted to fill the important social position which awaits her in Morgan City. The young couple were married on January tenth at- Jeanerette and came directly here to occupy cottage on Federal Avenue recently purchased and elegantly furnished by Mr. Kurzweg. the EVANGELINE Tonight is variety night at the playhouse facing tfie park. Price 5 and 10 Cent« CIVIC LEAGUE LECTURE ON FRIDAY EVENING The most important Civic event of the month will be the lecture by S. J. Kendall at the city hall on Fri day evening at 8:00 o'clock. The officials of the Civic League are to be commended upon securing a speaker such as Dr. Kendall in the furtherance of the community spirit. As previously announced, Dr. Kendall will give an illustrated lec ture on "Mexico and Her Problem." While here Dr. Kendall and Mrs. Kendall who will accompany him will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Warren B. Reed. Mrs. Reed is sec retary of the Civic League. On Saturday afternoon there will be a reception for Dr. and Mrs. Kendall at the home of Mrs. A. F. Storm, the president of the Civic League. EXPERT RIFLEMEN Washington, Jan. 22.—Declara tions that since the days of frontiei ' life have passed, Americans are no j longer enlisted to their former ' fame as riflemen are completely re ! futed by statistics, say officers of j the U. S. Marines. These officers re cently compiled data showing that ' splendid shooting qualities are still ! characteristic of American troops, More than seventy-three per cent of the 6141 members of • the United j ! I States Marine Corps who fired dur ing 1916, on the fourteen Marine Corps rifle ranges, are qualified skilled riflemen, according to the table just compiled. Of these sea soldiers, 921, or fifteen per cent, are expert riflemen; 1044, or seven teen per cent, are sharpshooters; and 2518, or forty-one per cent, are j marksmen! It is doubtful if Leatherstocking himself could outshoot them, say the Marines. Thorgeson, called attention to the double charge against Sol Loeb for water service, dating since May 15th, 1916, and am ounting to S3.54; and recommended that a warrant for the amount be issued in his favor. Mr. Squires made a motion that the Secretary issue a warrant for $3.54 in favor of Sol Loeb account of overcharge on water bill for 1916. The motion was seconded by Mr. Jones and carried. A communication from Mr. B. A. Boyle was received and read, he asking to have the Burgess house which adjoins his property declared a nuisance in its present condition and that it be repaired or demolished. Mr. Clement made a motion that City Engineer write to the owners of the Burgess property and demand that the property be put in repair or demolished, also that he write Mr. A. H. Angelloz of Grosse Tete, La., owner of the Douglas place, and make the same demand, stating in his letter that the City vAmld demolish the plage at once if its demand be not complied with. The motion was seconded by Mr. Jones and carried. Mr. Clement made a motion that the City Engineer call the attention of the Morgan City Electric Co., to the exhaust from the power plant, with a request that they take steps to correct the nuisance. Seconded by Mr. Norman and carried. Mr. L. R. Blakeman tended his resignation to be effective February 1st, ! 1917. Mr. Suqires made a motion that the resignation be accepted and j effective February 1, 1917, and that the Secretary write Mr. Blakeman a letter on behalf of the Mayor and Council of the City of Morgan City, thanking him for his» prompt and efficient service rendered by him while a member of the police force.
