From Patterson Tribune: The Parish School Board is facing the probability of running the sehool term six and two-thirds months, instead of the usual nine months, owing to insufficient funds. This is a deplorable fact and one which only the qualified electors of St. Mary are able to remedy. The board has called a special election for November 13th for the purpose of voting a one and one-half mill tax for the continuance of the ses sion. And in a time when educa tion has become the main factor of success, it behooves every man qual ified to vote to do so willingly and without regret. The coming gener ation needs all of the advantages de rived from education. It would se riously impair the children of today to have their term shortened. One of the severest handicaps they would be a six months session. If there is the slightest shortening of the school term, we shall find St. Mary in a few years with a generation of in competents. All parishes and states are yearly improving the standard of their schools, St. Mary, is no exception, but if the proposition of an added mill and one-half tax upon property valuation is not carried through then the schools of St. Mary will begin to retrogress. Therefore every effort should be made to bring the educa tional machinery of St. Mary's Par ish to a greater degree of effective ness, fitting our boys and girls to the new necessities of war time indus tries. eW cannot afford to stint their training. Let every voter in St. Mary, help to keep our schools at the top notch of efficiency. (Continued from page 1) farmer, and it is only by having roads fit to use at any season that this trouble and annoyance can be obviated. In hundreds of instances just the wear and tear alone on vehicles and automobiles will more than pay the small tax asked annu ally. Whereas the Congress of the Uni ted States, by a concurrent resolu tion adopted on the 4th day of the present month of October, in view of the entrance of our Nation into the vast and awful war which now afflicts the greater part of the world, has requested me to set apart by official proclamation a day upon which our people should be called upon to offer concerted prayer to Almighty God for His divine aid in the success of our arms; And whereas it behooves a great free people, nurture*' as we have been in the eternal j^nciples of jus tice and of right, a Nation which has sought from the earnest days of ex istence to be obedierlt to the divine teachings which have inspired it in the exercise of its liberties, to turn always to the Supreme Master and cast themselves in faith at His feet, praying for His aid and succor in every hour of trial, to the end that the great aims to which our fathers dedicated our power as a people may not perish among men, but be always asserted and defended with fresh ardor and devotion and, through the divine blessing, set at last upon enduring foundations for the benefit of all the free peoples of the earth: Now, therefore, I, Woodrow Wil son, President of the United States, gladly responding to the wish ex pressed by the Congress, do appoint October 28, being the last Sunday of the present month, as a day of sup plication and prayer for all the peo ple of the Nation, earnestly ex horting al my countrymen to ob serve the appointed day, according to their several faiths, in solemn prayer that God's blessing may rest upon the high task which is laid up on us, to the end that the cause for which we give our lives and treasure may triumph and our efforts be blessed with high achievement. In witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be af fixed. Done in the District of Columbia this nineteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, and of the independence of the United States of America the one hundred and forty-second.
