Camp Pike, Ark., Nov. 1, 1917. Mr. K. It. Hoed, Morgan City, La. My d-ar Brother: Received your welcome leter and am very proud to hear the good news and that your people are thoroughly alive. Your showing on the Liberty Bonds is excellent and 1 congratulate Morgan City and your Parish on this showing. It is also good news of the success of the Army "Y" fund. Go to it and get after it hard for the Lord knows theirs is a wonderful work, What on earth would the boys do f 0 r amusement when a quarantine comes along keeping them from town if it were not for the "Y", and you know we sometimes get such things as the measles and such like and all have to stay home. The Army "Y" is not only serv ing boys and furnishing them tech nical books as they need them. One might not think they were so much in demand but they are especially with an outfit like mine as the Sig-, nal Corps is made up of highly technical men and one cannot ex pect to advance to any great de gree unless he is in this class and "Bones" hard. We are teaching, studying« drilling, and working about 14 hours per day and the boys are so interested they havn't time to run around much as I have about 140 Non-Commissioned Of ficers to appoint out of my crowd 'rithin the next thirty to sixty days and its to be done solely on ability and the boys realize that and are working. And during all this mad rush for knowledgè the "Y" is furnishing the technical books at least some of them, and also for the boy that don't care to run to town they send his money home for him, also sell him stamps, and give him stationery, a good CLEARING UP TRENCHES AFTER BATTLE :oa mm m m sa* M. The general atnvwphere around these places IS the muni nuiiiviirvV—* I to the soldier of anything except j home, and deserves the heartiest j support that can possibly be given. | There is no question of a doubt j but that we will ship over and the , minute we are ready I want to go j so does every man in my battalion : and our whole study and thought is j to outdo the Kaiser and if working j and planning and American ingénu- I ity will do it, 1 think we can, as J they are all on the job with that j firm determination that leads to j success. We all realize that this is ; fight to the finish and that Ameri- J can Blood must be sacrificed on the j Shrine of Liberty and Democracy and we are ready for it, but in the meantime the folks at home must sacrifice with us and when I say this I do not mean put a few pal try dollars in and say they have done their part, for they havn't They must sacrifice with the boys that are going over the top—throw their dpllars behind us until hurts, economize at home and give us that support that will make ev ery last man feel and know that the folks at home are behind him. Whether this is done now or not it will have to be done before this great bloodshed is stopped and the world made safe for Democracy. There will be more Bond Issues and the boys in the Army will take their share and continue to take them as long as they are issued they will also do their level best to win this war and the least the civil ian population can do is to make it as comfortable for the boys as pos sible while they are doing this, and no better way can they do this than by getting behind this Army "Y" and supporting it until it hurts. Every dollar put into this worthy cause will help to bring good cheer ; and comfort as well as amusement to some mother's son deprived of the motheris influence, also help to create an atmosphere that is whole- j some and place such environments around these young men (that are the Nation's best) that will make them truly an asset to good citizen ship rather than a liability when this war has ended. .The Army is doing its best and really it is wonderful the good this training will do, we teach men to take aare of themselves and to know and hardihood nature intended ev most homelike ! ery man to possess as man is not a {fit soldier tost cannot stand up un ' der hardships and to do this it re of every re quires development source. I wish they would send me down in Louisiana, and especially Morgan City. Would certainly enjoy a vis it with you but this is out of the question. I have a few Louisiana boys left, but sent most of them to Alexandria last week. Hated to lose them but I was not consulted , ! i i I j in the matter.
