FLASHES FROM THE PARISH SEAT The finest pecans seen in this town 'this season came from the country home of Mr. W. T. Peter man. Salt water has appeared in the Bayou Teche, in this vicinity, caus ing apprehension on the part of the owners of sugar mills, as its con tinuance will seriously _ affect the operation of these mills, producing boiler trouble. The salt water is probably produced by high tides in the Gulf, and the low stage of the Bayou. Court resumed its session Thurs day, trying the case of the Gooch Craighead Co. against John Messeto for damages to one of their autos. The plaintiff company claims that the defendant drove out of his yard in an auto and hit their car, passing by, breaking it up consider ably. Quite a number of citizens from Patterson were present as wit nesses, amongst whom were Mr. William Folse and Mr. Jesse Col Jin». The School Board of the Parish of St. Mary has been called to meet in special session, Wednesday, Nov ember 21st, for the purpose of op ening the ballot boxes, used in the recent school tax election, officially count the. ballots, and promulgate the results. There is a feeling of general satisfaction throughout the Parish that this tax carried by a substantial majority assuring a con tinuous 9 months' session of public schools, the payment of the present school deficit, and permitting mon ey needed improvements in build ing and facilities. As soon as the opportunity to receive an education has been put within the reach „, wm u ■TO Child by sufficient schools and transfer system, compulsory education will follow and the next generation will not witness any res iden, ef this Parish, male or f.-! male, unable to read and write. The Y. M. C. A. Drive of War Fundsc is still on. The amount assessed aaginst Franklin is $600, which v'ill be raisa? wit.iin the time limit. Mr. R. E. Brumbv has su per* i&'on of the collections and is assisted by professional and busi ness men of the town, who ire will ing to give their time to the work. Franklin is very proud of having exceeded the other towns of the Parish in the number of Christmas gifts to hte soldiers. The rivalary between the towns in this Parish in Red Cross work is friendly, the dif ferent units cooperating with each other and e^ch special instance all hendring the one making the best showing in addition to the Red Cross, individual boxes have been •®Ht to f France from Franklin by relatais artd -friends of soldiers al readyTthere. Credk Given Foot Ball The "High School Reporter" evi dently did not see all of the good playing in Saturday's football game. Not enough credit was given to some of the players. Bella, our fail-back did splendid work, making j moBt of our successful bucks and also a great many of our successful tackling. He could not have played a better game. There was also Oli ver (right guard) who did good tackling. Tetroe, although, handi capped did well. Kahn held his man but was taken out on account of "lack of experience." Now we come to the second team who played against Patterson, some of their players did not get enough credit, also. ' Morse, a crack player, played his game well. Greenwald, anxious to get in and do some tackling, caused several penalties, but his tackling was great, so was Seumellion's. HIGH SCHOOL REPORTER •ays that he xsfifl Hp . Improper methods of harvesting and storing sweet potatoes are re sponsible for large losses which greatly decrease the value of the «soft according to A. F. Louisiana's sweet pota to crop fbr this year Is estimated to >he 6,000,000 bushels, and growers would do well to take precautions •gainst undue losses through careless Seme of the things to be observed •re as follows: 1. Potatoes should be thoroughly ■nature before being harvested. L They should be handled careful jly to prevent bruises, as such places «anse rot very quickly. S. Injured potatoes should not be stored with sound ones. 4. The potatoes should be sub jected to a temperature of 86 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit as soon as they iare put away, and the moisture eon lent reduced to 10 per cent or less. 5. Potatoes should be stored In a well built house, where the temper ature can be kept uniform. This will save a large per cent of all good sound potatoes, while the old bank jknethod usually causes a loss to 60 per cent. Old tenant houses can often be utilized for that purpose.
