PIERCE "RU# a .D F N 'Thanks to Dr. auellI A few days ago jfo fliat time in tile histor isi~ I politics, the peop14 were' ac quainted with the amount of money being used in a political campaign and how it is :being used. All the candidates for office for the State ticket includ ing the candidates for the United States Senate, submitted state ments of receipts and disburse. ments by them for campaign purposes to date. The people were pernitted tojudge whether it is being spent .improperly. 'this requirement of the State. Central Committee serves as a check iupon politicians 'who try to buy their way -ito office. That the effect of this party; law will be good is:-not to be doubted. It will in all probabili ty be made.the.'la' of the land in accordance with a similar law passed by Congress and applying to members of that. body, Pubs, lie sentiment has demanded greater publicity of financial expenditures in political - campaigns. Dr. Aswell has the honor and and deserves the credit for being the first to advocate campaign publicity in this campaign. He incorporated a demand for it in min his platform, which he sub mitted to the people last April, sand he fdllowed this up by mak" ing itand issue, laying great em phasis upon it in his opening speeh at Ruston. In ~he eighty. three speeches that Dr. Aswell delivered in various parts of the State previous to the meeting of the State Central Committee he did not fail to advocate campaign publicity. So well was his work accomplished and so thoroughly did the people agree With him that the publicity resolution was adopted dy the State Central Committee without a dissenting vote. - In this; as in other instances, Dr,. Aswell rfirmed a splendid public service. His demand for clean elections found an immedi ate; response from the people.-• The Independent. I dm suie i. she will tell you if she wants you know." At once the curious one went c to Gretchen and said, "Nelly said that you would tell me yourself. 'Why 1 never said any such a. thing"!' protested Gre tche n.. "How could she have told you so? I think it was abominable of her, t when I trusted and confided in her:".. Whereupon a fine three-sided quarrel was well under way. And te' wole cause was simply an instance of careless reporting, which $ firmly believe causes half of the misunderstandings, dis. agreements and broken friend ships in the world. That was a case where a state- I nient was actually beheaded, but we all know how much mere intonation or inflection can change the meaning of the simplest sentence. Probably you remember the 'passage in Middlemarch, where - Lydgate appeals to his wife to " help him get out of the debts into which her extravagance has helped to plunge him? Rosa" mond's reply is perfectly heart Sless, but the heartlessness -is wholly in inflection. 1 "What can I do, Teritus?" said Rosamond, turning her eyes on his again. That little speech of four words, ljke so' many i others in all languages, is capable by varied vocal inflections, , of expressing .alL.states of -mind, from helpless dimness to ex haustive argumentative percep tion;, from the coftpletest self devoting fellowship to the inmost neutral aloofness, Rosamond's thin., utterance threw into the words. "What can I do?" as much r neutrality as they could .hold.. Now, suppose some partisans of iRosamond were telling of, Lydgate's. unjustifiable wrath, with his wife and were to repeat, Ithat passage. How easily in his report the " aWhat can I doP?" Bmight become the most eager Sand loving offer of help from a Sdevoted wife. .H aven't you .often heard some one repeat. a conversation, at whicb you hbednbe present, aid Sbeen-amrused and astonished at 'the wholesale ipnoauracies, both f aphrit an letterI, i. the report? The thing to do is to vote for Aswell and do away with the second primary. As well is the min who will eventb ally defeat- the ring. 8o let's get together and let him do it in the first primary. Hall has his Judgeship, the job that has been his life-long ambition, and can not be ipjured. We heard a fellow say the other day that he. was chased away from the Lake the other Sday because he wanted to get a .few ducks for supper. The man with whom he was talking sugt ' gested that the ducks were being preserved for a few of the ring bosses and their friends about New Orleans.-Slidell American.
