Thanking you one and all for your support at the tolls at the election 1 am, Yours very respectfully, M. I. VARNADO. Pal t of Sister's Muntiliated Body Fail to Move Annie Crawford Twenty minutes before time for court to open Monday morn ing in the Annie Crawford mur der trial, in New Orleans, the court room was filled-with men. Not only that, it was filled with young men. One might well have marveled over the almost total absense of women, and over the scarcity of gray heads. It is one of the most wonderful things connected with this extra ordinary case, that the chief actor in it seems to be entirely deserted by her own sex; that two of the principal wit nesses against her are members of her own family, and women; and that day after day she sits alone at the bar, cut off from all womanhood. It would be very pathetic, indeed, if she seemed to feel her isolation--perhaps it is all the more pathetic that she does not seem to feel it. From the very moment the tr4al opened it was a battle of giants. By the side of the accused girl were Lionel Adams and Mr. Generelly, watch. ing Revery point. fighting for ery inch of the ground. On the side of the prosecution was lair Adams, the District At. it and keen. In the x was Dr. Metz, un as examination-an r toxicologist, who knew what he meant to say,and said it. And for hours the battle raged, and question and answer flew back and forth; and there sat the something that might have been a woman, Iso shrouded in black thbi not even the outlines of hIer face could be seen; silent, 'oitionless, not to be moved by any emotion, no ratter of what And before the (lay was over there wis room f)r emoti)on. '*hen the sensation of the day was sprung, that Sunday morn inj A gralve of u-or little Elise 'brd1h4ad dbeenipened again; thit Ii group ecoianosed of the coroner and his assiitants anl a learned patholo~it had one, more taken the .body from thLr coin;i that in a shedl out there in the eemeeraty ithad been opened once mOre, and all thle organs re mainig iafter this tirs, exanina t,,,n removed; when the brain, th;etF1rtal co)rl aid -;.r an;l lungs and:: Iet- and the enti re viscera had bien taken- out and examined microssopically, and allt were produced :there in the coUrt ilelyi if :Annie. 'l'There ~ t ere bitter dis~ .r t, I lents hlotwoen 1 hie p1ro:se'rUt,i ll f and tile defense t)ward the I tst and SCOres of men arose without f knowing that they did 'so,' and pressed forward until they stOwod in a close crowd about the bar and the excitement was so ex treme that they were uncon scious what they did. The entire courtroom was tingling with eager and absorbed interest The only absolutely unmoved person in the room was the young woman in black, with the lower ed veil. MONSTROUS. 1NRCEDIBLE. Whether she were guilty or innocent, seems a monstrous and incredible thing that she should show no trace of emotion when confronted by the evidence of that second opening of the tomb, I and of the unhappy little sister whom an outward fate will not allow to rest. Even though she were guilty, she might be supposed to have some little remnants of love for her sister. If she were innocent the thing would be altogether unendurable. People watched her in amaze ment and with a shudder. It was uncanny-it was mom strous. No matter what her guilt or innocence, she stands alone, as the hardest or the most indiffer ent or tile most selfabsorbed woman th it ever faced a tribunal. It was one of the ghastliest spectacles ever brought before human eyes-it was a scene of dramatic intensity that made the blood run cold. Every man pres ent leaned forward with staring. eyes. But the one woman kept her veil down and did not shiver. Attorney General Pleasant Goes to.lJna to 'Take up the Prisecution of Mizell. As a result of the controvesy between District Attorney Per rin and presiding Judge Wear at Jena. La., in the trial of Mizell for a midnight assassina tion whicb controversy resulted in Judge Wear's imprisoning Attorney Perrin for 48 hours in the parish jiil, Attorney General Pleasant was sent by Gover nor Sanders to Jena to conduct the prosecution. SThe serious trouble which was confidently exnected by the friends of both factors, seems to have betin entirely averted and all cmncerned express themse Ives as well pleased to have the At torney General take charge of .the case.
