M. Gann in Boga- G; in sa about five years ago, have of id cently been settled and compro ie iised. w re Gann was killed by deputy 1j esheriffs, who attempted to arrest H him, and his son and CGeorge ye Seal. who were with him, were ar- Cc rested, Seal being wounded. The ut deputy Sheriffs were seriiously % wounded but recovered. ze The widow anid heirs of Ganun, ri, and Seal, brought suit against hi the deputy Sheriffs arnd the (Great lu Southern Lumber Company, for $265,000, claiming that tihe F sheriffs were eiliploVyed by Ahe A Great Southern Lumiber Cor- f~ Iany as peace officers. The suits :bt were tried before juries of Wash 4 ington Parish, and judg rnerut ai was rendered in favor of the' widow and heirs, and Seal, for h: >00,000. e Carson, one of the deputy it slheriffs, was. indicted and tried for p killing Gainii, but the jury failed i~ to agree and the charge against , him was finally dismissed. These judgeiments, which were perhaps tihe largest ever rendered a in damage suits in Louisiana, r, were comlpromised, it is under- st stood, by the payment of 8,4000 ai to the widow and heirs of Gann, p and $1000 to Mr. Seal. The amount of damages allowed in these cases caused considerable comment, every one realizing that the judgements were exces sive anid would niot be allowed to stand. The compromise would seem therefore to be miore just to both parties and amicable settlement of the claim considered a relief. A Thought For' The Coming Campaign. The man that I want to vote for is the man that never takes a drink. I mean strong drink; tl ' kind of drink that deprives a man of reason and good judgemient. I have seen many good men and boys in my young days who have fallen victims to strong drink and were led to everlasting ruin. Many of them were good friends of mine and would have- stood high in social circles if it had not been for the drink .habit that is still leading many men down to a premature grave. I want every man who is elect ed to office in this State from Governor down to Constable, to be men who will be ready to put his shoulder to to the wheel and B help put alcoholic beverages out of existence so far as our state and nation are concerned. If Russia qin get along with out it we can too. I know that there is no good in D it, at least I know that there are I many leading physicians who claim that there is no good in I those beverages even for medical ~ purposes. The friends of the liquor interat claim that it would deprive them I of legitimate business, but a business that tends to debauch and degrade mankind should not be a legalized business. Our legislative authorities are striving to stamp out all conta gious diseases by establishing a Board of Health while the liquor business is causing more prema tuq4epthy anP more sin and crnme thaii all else combined.
