For terms apply to i e of Astronomers To Upon to Place The Vatican has announced that a conference of astronomers will take place in Rome next April under the presidency of Cardinal Mercier, with the object of reforming the calendar and fixing Easter. Äi-i The occurrence this year of Easter Sunday on March 27, within five days of its earliest possible date, revived the proposal of a fixed Easter. No fewer than 16 Easters will happen in March between now and the close of the century—an average of one every five years—unless something is done to prevent the erratic wandering of the festival between March 22 and April 25. ■> Under the existing ecclesiastical rule Easter Sunday can fall on any of 35 dates. The present rule is that Easter must be a Sunday and that the ecclesiastical full moon (which is not the same as the real moon) upon which it depends Imust occur on one of the seven days immediately pre ceding it. Thus, to have Easter Sun day on its earliest date, March 22, the ecclesiastical moon must be full on March 21, which date must also be a Saturday, tut so rarely are these conditions satisfied in the same years that it is over a century since Easter fell on March 22, and it will not again fall so early until the year 2295. Of late years the inconvenience of a movable Faster has induced calen dar reformers to propose reforms which will either make Easter a fixed festival or greatly restrict its wan derings. One suggestion is that Easter Sunday should be assigned to the third Sunday after the spring equinox, which would give ij, a range of eight days, between April 5 and April 13, according to the date and day of the week on which the equinox falls. \ Other proposals aim at an Easter absolutely fixed to one date. That of course would necessitate a radical reform of the whhle calendar, under which the same week-day should al ways fall on the same, date. Any such reform will probably have to be universal throughout Christen dom, for the moon-controlled Easter is common to all civilized countries; though owing to the fact that the Greek church still uses the Julian calendar, there are always nearly two Easier days every year, one the Gregorian, observed by Roman Catho lics and Protestants and the other the Julian, kept by those countries which are in communion with the Greek church. Health Unit Notes November 26, 1921. Although diphtheria is now fairly quiescent, it has not entirely disap peared. One new case has just been reported from Cane River above the dam, and another case has been re ported from ( loutiervilie. There ia a tendency for diphtheria carriers and tnose in charge of them to grow careless and neglect the precau tions required by the Health authori ties, after they no longer know of any active cases of diphtheria. This is a grave responsibility on those persons and should be immediately rectified. Ene rgeti c nose and throat treatment wflt~ëh&r the average ease in from one to two weeks, then no farther respon sibiity for a possible epidemic remains. Children with coughs and colds should be kept away from school. A crowded school room is the worst place for those affections; it is doubtful if the child can assimilate much knowledge at such a time; and he certainly is a men ace to his fellow students, This week we visited schools at Kisatchie, Bellewood, Vowell'sMill and at Goldonna, making the physical ex aminations of children, and vaccinating for typhoid. At GoMonna we started an investigation of the source of a case of typhoid infection which has recently been acquired by one of the pupils. The response on the part of parents in the treatment of physical defects of their children is quite variable. In some schools t has been very good; in one it has been almost ill. Yet in this last school there are cases where the child is quite deaf in one ear because of an accumulation of ear wax—something which is so easily curable, so embarasH ing to the child's progress, and some thing which may occur to anyone who does not have an examination made when deafness occurs. Regular yearly physical examinations are desirable for adults as well as for children. > Gall for Bids Bids will be received untill 10 o'clock a. m. I felt sure I'd be entirely happy. I used to jot down the titles of books 1 intended to read, and when I re tired from busi ness I hud a list as long as the Russian battle line. "And now that I can read all I want to, I don't get any enjoy ment out of books. They bore me the worst way. I get sleepy as soon as I begin to read, and my wife comes and tells me my snoring Is disturbing the neighbors." "It's that way with everything we look forward to," observed the hotel keeper, sadly. "Man always will be, but Is never blest, as some half-baked poet remarked. Young Gooseworthy ivas In here last evening, bubbling over with happiness. There wasn't any body around, so he took me Into his confidence. He's going to marry Gwendolln Jimalong, next month, and he's perfectly satisfied that his mar ried life will be one long stretch of sunshine. He seems to have the idea that he's going to do'something orig inal when he gets married, but the Idea Isn't new. Men have been getting married ever since Christopher dis covered Columbus, Ohio, and every doggone man jack of them had the idea that everlasting bliss was going to be inaugurated on the wedding day. "I listened to Gooseworthy for three hours, and hadn't the heart to say anything that would dampen his en thusiasm. His twittering recalled the long vanished days when I was get ting ready to be married. I felt about It then just as he does now. I thought the parson opened the gates of para dise when he joined two loving hearts. My wife lived up to all the plans and specifications, and was and is one of the best women In the United States, bnt I hadn't been married three months before I had" a sneaking, con viction that the man who gets married Is a chump. "A good many optimists say that a married man doesn't need any more money than a single one. If he marries the right sort - of woman, but they might as well go to -the blackboard and demonstrate that two and two make two, instead or four. I fell for that cheerful theory when I was mar ried. I was earning enough to keep myself comfortably, and never had any financial worries. I could have been bmied for less money than It took to be married, and the expenses from that time forward were double wha{ they nsed to be, although my wife was so economical she used to make waists and such things for her self out of my superannuated shirts. "Oh, doggone it, there Isn't any nn. adulterated happiness in matrimony. I wonder that young fellows like Goose worthy don't look around them, and contemplate the dejected appearance of the majority of husbands. But even if they dld. lt wouldn't do them any good, I suppose, for they are full of pipe dreams, and they think the girls they are going to marry are different from all other girls, and that they will prove exceptions to the general rule. "I had a wise old uncle in those hal cyon days, and about a week before the wedding day, he backed me into a corner and handed me a dust-proof package of wisdom. He tried to lead me Into taking a sensible view of the future. He talked about the cares and responsibilities that would be mine after the wedding, and wanted to know If I felt equal to them. He tried to show me that I wasn't going to marry an angel, but a human being like myself, with a human being's faults and frailties. "I let him get that far, and then | told him that his gray hairs alone saved him from having hts head re modeled, and said I never wanted him to darken my door, and he never did. I had to darken It myself, with wal nut stain. But many a time after ward, I recalled his wise words and wept over his grave." / Well Off. "After all a man never knows when he's well off." "What's happened now?" "I was just thinking what a fool I was for trading off my Liberty bonds for oil stock." Nut Waiter Wanted. An old lady, after waiting In a con fectionery store for about ten minutes, grew grossly Impatient at the lack of service. Finally she rapped sharply on the counter. "Here, young lady," she called, "who waits on the nuts?"—Everybody's Mag asine. y The Consequence. "At the anti-dog meeting nobody fnuzzled the speakers." 'That was the reason, then, there so many biting renarks." The United States holds at least 40 percent oi the world's gold supply.
