Congress meets next Monday, and while we are not certain that Mr. Roberts will be sent back as unclean, we trust he will; and that the action will be a lesson to Utah, which h:*.s an au lactiy startling in I lie exireme, know ing the feeling ol the other States, as it does, on this question. The election of Roberts to the lower House cannot be considered other than as the grossest insult to the American institutions as Utah knew them and bet:tmi them at the date of her admission to State hood only a short while ago, and to endeavor, at this early date to ■ram polygamy down our throats, in the very face of the Edmunds law, enacted to annihilate it in Utah, and the statutes ot all other States, restraining it under the criminal code, such a resolution would be a just retribution. — Frank lin Vindicator News. of planters arc well satisfied with th«* output so far. The extra«* tion this year was never better, and while the supply of cane is unpreeedently small yet it yields in abundance the best and finest quality of sugar. Of course the The sugar grinding season is progressing on smoothly at tin* i various sugar mills in this vicini ty, and from reports the majority severe freeze last winter discour- j a «rgd many planters and affecteel the industry to a great extent, I but with ail of this they have | planted in cane all available lands ; ' . . i r and a heavy yield is assured for next year, w ith anything like fa vorable conditions. To tin* most optimist, the idea «it health going hand in hand with this putrid matter is impossi ble. That the planters, in viola tion of tin* law on the subject, are responsible for this unsani tary state of affairs, is beyond question—lienee we say "might makes right"—As a matter of fact, nowev«*r, we think the planters are only following in the wake of the n*st of humanity, not withstanding their employment in sweetening the land and that they observed the common rule that points to convenience as tin* shortest way out of trouble. The bayou is right at the «loot* of t!i<* refinery which thus becomes tin* natural receiver of all useless or objectionable matter—there is no malice intend«*«! and this article is written with tin* desire of call ing attention to tin* suffering <*on dition of the people who line tin banks of the bayou and w hose cry for purity is based on sanitary claims and a protest not to be shamed befon* a world that has revered the Te«*lu* as the romantic stream chosen by the sweetest poet as worthy to go down in undying and exqui ite song. Oh! mighty sugar barons! have a care! Suppose Evangline <*an look upon the Itosom of Hu* Tech«* of today! lier lamentations are surely redoubled, lias she not suffered enough? Still, there may b«* some plant er w ho care not a fig for Evange line, her sorrows or her delight in the beautiful bayou de«lieat«*d to lier memory, and we apply t«> those in a way that may appeal to their practical methods. From New Iberia to Morgan t'ity tin* poisonous acids are emptied into the bayou—therefore, sbotihl one or more planters wish to go t<> tin trouble and expense of otherwise disposing of tin* stuff, it would be useless and here it comes in order for tin* Bann'EIJ to suggest that a Convention of planters ! «• [held, when* ways ami means m;iy i { »e discusseil to render the bayou Jess objectionable and healthier and to formulate some plan by whieh the refuse matter may b«* burnt, buried or otherwi*«* «le* troved.
