Disposing of Cane. Our small planters of sugar cane liave not settled down as yet upon any uniform system of disposing of their crops. Being -well satisfied that it will not pay to put lip small mills necessarily imperfect in the extraction of the juice, and with equally poor facilities for its conversion into sugar, able to contend with the pro ducts of giant rollers and vacuum pans, they are castiug about for some plan by which they may hope to obtain a fair ré munération for the expense of production, and all incidental expenses. Some are selling by the ton, the cane to be deliv ered at certain points, while others are bargaining for a give» runouut of sugar from each ton of cane worked np. As there is » great difference in the richness of the juice at different stages of the grinding season, the plan of giving a cer tain per centage of the yield per tan would sec m to lie a very fair plan for both the manufacturer and producer. With square dealing in the sugar house or refinery, there ought to be no difficulty in arriving «t satisfactory results. Each party will get his share of the sugar in the cane and sell as his judgment directs. The better plan perhaps in order to divide the risks and leave as little room for dissatisfaction as possible, would be to effect an arrange ment whereby the producers would re ceive a per centage of the sugar made from the cane. Such an arrangement -would close the door agaiust any bicker ings in regard to the poverty of the juice. Peddling Cart. —Mr. Albert Mestayer has stated a merchandizing cart, with his brother Norbert in charge, and will op »•rate chiefly in the Fausse Poiute section. We wish him success in the venture. Getting Ready, —Mr, Jac Levy, one of the partners in the firm of Jacob Davis & Co., has arrived here and is having the stores cleaned and prepared for the heavy invoice of goods expected in a few weeks. Home Again. —Our esteemed fellow-citi zens Judge Fred. L. Gates and 8heritf P. A. Veazey are home again after their trip to Waukesha, at the Arcadian Springs in Wisconsin, looking a decade younger than when they left. To hear them expatiate .upon the merits of the water, the urbanity and genial nature of the hosts, and the courteous bearing of both citizens and vis itors, one would think they had found the very spot the credulous Ponce de Leon sought in vaiu for amidst the wilds of Florida. With health restoring waters, a bracing climate, the choicest of viands served up in styles to suit all tastes, to gether with the most accomplished ca terers for the comfçnt of visitors, and boon companions to while away the hours with, we are not surprised that they should Lave Waukesha on the brain. The Judge says that the rejuvenating properties of the Spring are such that an octogenarian is in a day or two converted into a ruddy cheeked youth in his teens, and the ganders that warned the Romans of the approach of Brennas and his Gallic hosts, after a swim or two across its sil very surface would find themselves green goslings in the pen feather stage of de velopmeut. Waukesha mnst iudeed be a charming summer resort not alone for the debilitated, bnt all who de sire a change of climate, and would take pleasure on the wing. We have little doubt that their experienoe and the pub licity it will obtain through their relera tioos as regards the virtues of the water and the social delights of a sojourn there in the dog days, will induce sn exodus in that direction by our people in considera ble numbers next year, and be increased in volume as the years roll on and their means augment. ' Cotton in the Seed. —Necessity, the pa rent of sacrifices, is urging the thriftless black man to push Iiis cotton in the market in the seed, and wagons may be daily seen moving along our streets in search of a purchaser. Twin Earn. —There was left at our office this morning by one of the Hebert broth ers, twin ears of corn raised by them on the Mrs. Daniel's plae.e, Fausse l'ointe, which adds another to the inaoy freaks of nature as developed during 1885, in the animal and vegetable kingdoms. t~W A three mule cane cart, almost new, is offered for sale, cheap. Apply at the "Enterprise" office. Removed. —The Messrs. Ilenry Brothers have removed their jewelry establishment two doors above the one occupied by them oil Main street. The new store has been neatly fitted up, and the Baltimore &, Ohio Telegraph Office will be in the «aine establishment under the charge of Mr. Millard. The Weather. —Local showers have pre vailed in limited supplies for two or three days past and have been beneficial to the gardens as well as conducive to comfort in travelling our streets, which before their advent were getting quite dusty. They also assisted in maintaining uar sup ply of cistern water. For Sale Cheap and on Time —A twelve horse ]K»wer engine, boiler, sugar mill and cane carrier. Apply at the "Euterprise" office. « Returned to Hi9 Home. —Mr. William Robertson, who has been on a visit of some two weeks to Memphis to see his mother, now in her ninetieth year and en joying a degree of health and vigor sel dom to be met with in one so far advanced upon the journey of life, is home again looking remarkably well, and accidents barred bids fair to rival his maternal pa rent in the lease of life. Change of Office.—Mr. L. O. Hacker has removed his office into the room occupied by the Benevolent Association, over the store of Mr. J. C. M. Robertson, where lie will be pleased to welcome all who desire to indulge a little in the luxury of litti gation. He will be on hand at the call of customers, and warrants the drawing of a prize by every one who secure a ticket of his selection in the legal lottery. Gr Paducah Club Whiskey, equal to the best, for sale at A. Erath's. Oysters. —With the advent of the first of the months which are spelled with the letter R, the oyster season opens in all countries north of the equatorial belt where the delicious bivalves can be had fresh, and our location being such as to admit of ample supplies at moderate prices, we may expect shortly to be revel ling in those crnstacioiu luxuries. One boat load has already been put upou the market. Facilitien For Turning Boat». —The cut in the bank at St. Martinsville for turn ing boats to avoid the difficulty of de scending stern foremost, has been en larged by Capt. Belt at his own expense to accommodate his round boats. The old cut was ample enough to serve the Mary Lewis and boats of her length, but was too restricted for such boats as Capt. Belt proposes to run iu the trade, and hence his enlarging of it. JBelting, Hose aud Steam Fittings at A. Erath's. Also the Charter Oak Stoves. Precaution is the Parent of Safety. —There is a good deal of sickness, chiefly of the fever type, prevailing in the parish just now, and as we are admonished by a very old proverb that "prevention is better than cure," it would be well for our peo ple to avoid all exercises calculated to provoke au attack. There are certain rules of hygiene that should be observed at nil times, and especially wheu diseases show a tendency to assume an epidemic character. The sickness now is of course merely endemic, but it may under certain conditions of atmospheric influence aud from other causes, assume more repulsive features. Fire Company Xo. 2'$ Grand Ball. —All hands and the cook must remember that a Grand Ball to aid in purchasing a Steam Fire Engine is to come off this evening at Serrett's Hall. A few doUars contributed to the cause now will not ouly be well re paid with enjoyment of the rarest kind, but may some day be repaid with com pound interest wheu property iB threat ened by the destroying element. The boys are very anxious to secure an engine and believe that the City Fathers can do something to help the thing along by a slight increase of taxation, in the form of a special call upon the property holders. The flame extinguishers we have had up to the present time have paid for them selves ten times over, and as we are still short of the required strength for a big fight in a high wind, it is to be hoped that by hook or by crook the boys will get the engine. We have heard that a number of influential citizens will contribute liber ally in furtherance of the cause, provided the municipal authorities will incline a favorable ear to the petition of the boys for assistance. t Callahan <t Lewis, steam e istern factory, New Iberia, La Send for price list. yew Syrup.—O ut fellow-citizen, Mr. Victor Bartlie, who is never satisfied to eome out neck and neck in a race, but al ways aims to be at least a full length ahead, has brought to town tlie first new syrup of 1885. It is a nice article and will tickle the palates of all who revel iu sac charine sweets to the wines. We wish liini success in his early departure. Hymenial. —On Thursday, at the resi dence of the bride's father, Mr. Sylvestre Romero, on Lake Tasse, Mr. Edward De, blanc and MissNezilda Romero were united in the silken bands of matrimony. The groom was a widower, and having tasted the sweets of wedded life and found it a safe thing to tic to, concluded to have himself tied up again. His friends in order to have a hand in celebrating the nuptial delights of the honey moon treated the loving couple to a serenade. We wish the happy pair the fruition of their fondest hopes as they journey along the pathway of life. Call for Paducah Club Whiskey, for sale at A Erath's. Meeting of the Educational Society. —We again call the attention not only of the members but the public generally, to the regular monthly meeting of the Educa tional Society next Saturday evening, at o'clock, at Serrett's Hall, instead of to-day as previously announced, the first aud third Saturday of each month being meeting days of the Board of Directors, while the Society meets on the 2d Saturday There ought to be no necessity for a notice to the members, but as other business may engross their attention also, we have thought it not amiss to remind them of their duties iu this all important cause. CïPBest and cheapest Building Material at A. Erath's. Bound to Hare Their Rereuge. —Our Base Ball club having been three times de feated by that of St. Martinsville, are not disposed to own up the corn, as the boys that compose it can bo heard daily aud nightly whistling the tune or "It will never do to give it up so Mr. Brown, It will »ever do to give it up so," and to-morrow two weeks will wade into the poppiu jays of that antiquated rep resentative of past prosperous generations, and leave them shorn of their laurels as was Sampson of his locks after a brief nap with his head resting in the lap of Deli lah. The renowned curve pitcher, Ed mond Broussard, will be on hand and show the old town boys how to learn the ball the tricks of a boomrang, nr'Ice Cream Freezers and Water Cool ers at reduced prices at A. Erath's. Returned to Their Haunt». —Our police men for a month or more seemed to be do ing a land-office business in sending un sophisticated canines on pilgimages to that blissful paradise beyond this eplieme ral existence, set apart for man's most faithful friend and companion, where the trees are burthened with their harvests of marrow bones, and the valleys flow with delicious broths, but one would think that the ghosts of all the dogs expatriated for twenty years past, reinforced by brig ad es of relatives and friends, had returned to bark and howl their curses in the ears of their executioners, as our nights are now made hideous with their hellish discord. There seom to be ten dogs now where there was one before the era of poisoned sau sages, and the only reasonable solution of the riddle is that the present howlers are the defunct of the preseut and past years, in new bodies. The police are again on the war path exterminating canines, which seem to be hydra headed and multiply as we have said in more than a direct ratio to the slaughter made of them. As our people are not educated up to an appreciation of dog meat for roasts, stews, broils aud sau sages, and no Chinese are here to utilize such delicate tit bits, the Corporation might make a handsome speculation by colonizing them on some of the Gulf coast islands, and slaughtering them every winter and shipping the meat duly salted to China and the hides to France to be tanned and worked up into gloves.
