Nicol, arrived in town last Tuesday night to witness the tests of the waterworks and electric light plaut, preparatory to their final acceptance by the city. All of the machines are being thoroughly tested by experts and in a few dav* more it is expected that the works will be ready for formal delivery to the city. The pipe li ne has been subjected to two rigid tests, under pressure of 100 to 117 pounds, and only three minor leaks have thus fni developed. The electrical ma chinery develops the highest effl cienej and the arc light service of the city is highly satisfactory, even though it has uot, yet had a fair test, due to the bright moonlight nights prevailing during the week. on the dollar kok goods as exhibited at daigre's. —We find the following interest ing item in a telegraphic report from Alexandria of date April 4th : "Superintendent Allen submitted I to the board a report showing the receipts and disbursements of the electric light and waterworks plant for a period of fourteen months, from Jan. 1,1900, to March 1,1901, which was as follows: Total run ning expenses, including fuel and salary of employees, $11,693 11; total improvements added to the plant, $1299 G2; total, $12,992 73; total receipts, $10,238 03 ; net earn ings, $3245 30; net earnings, less improvements made, $4545 92.' This is an object lesson to New Iberia that she must surely be anxi ous to emulate. It is recommended for planting in rich well tilled npland soils where there is a long warm season to ma ture the crop. The plant grows from two and one-half to five feet high, well branched with stout spreading branches, bearing an unusually large boll, and has re markable drought-resistant quali ties. We are informed that Mr. Oscar Darby has been experiment ing with it with most gratifying results, having obtained from it as mnch as 3000 pounds of seed cot ton to the acre. He has sold seed from it at $4.00 per sack. It is also reported that Mr. Edward Le Blane has likewise had a similarly favorable experience with it. All employees of the New Iberia Knitting Mill are notified to report at the mill on Tnesday morning. W. J. M agee , Supt. —In making this city headquar ters for the Morgan division of the Southern Pacific Railroad, extend ing from Algiers to Alexandria, New Iberia receives recognition of its importance by the Southern Pa cific Company that is most gratify ing. Mr. C. B. Ellis, division freight and passenger agent, in charge of the office, has arrived here with his family, and has been around get ting acquainted with the business people of New Iberia. He is a pleasant, unassuming, approachable gentleman, with whom all having business will find it agreeable to treat. The opening of headquar ters here and the installation of Mr. Ellis was the occasion of visit by Mr. Fay, general traffic manager for the Southern Pacific Mr. A. J. Mestayer and others have a pro ject started for the constrnction of I a narrow guage railroad from the border of Lake Fausse Pointe across the prairie a distance of three and one-half miles, where they will con nect with the Gousonlin tramway, which extends six miles to bayou Teche. The train starts out from Crowley, pass ing New Iberia at 7:54 ; fare for round trip, $1.90. His health is mnch improved, and he expects to remain in the city for several days after the acceptance of the works —A light frost was noticeable on the morning of the 3d. THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. The public school entertainment to be given at the opera house, on j Monday night, April 8th, promises to be exceptionally good. The pro gram will be a varied one, bring iug before the audience nearly 300 pupils, each of the fourteen rooms being represented. Among the features will be the stately minuet, by sixteen dainty pupils from Mrs. Peale's room ; "Apple Blossoms," by six tots fromMissPollard's room ; motion song by twenty pupils from Miss Beer's room ; Eugene Field's touching poem,"The Little Peach," will be rendered to music by twelve of Miss Bradley's pupils ; and the "Witches Dance" will be given by nine pupils from Miss Richardson's room ; twenty-four boys from Miss Thorn's room will appear in "The Shepherd'sDrill,"and"Little Shak ing Quakers" is tobe pnt on by Miss Sealy's pupils, Master Gil bert Kahn having the solo part. The laughable character song, "Jolly Little Waiters," will be rendered by twenty-five pupils from the fifth and sixth grades, these grades also furnishing the band of wild Indians under Miss Corapton's control ; the seventh grade girls appear in a beantifnl Pantomime, ; and forty-five pupils from the High : School department present a pano- ; ramie view of twenty centuries of j history. The address of welcome will be delivered by Miss Annie Cooksley, the ninth grade. The program will be plentifully interspersed with music, in which will appear Mrs Dégénérés, Miss Beers, Miss Brad ley, Cestia Lawton and others. A number of historic tableaux have been arranged, and everything points to a successful rendition of a very entertaining program. At the prices of 25c and 10c, it is expected that the opera house will be crowd ed at an early honr. The enrtain will rise at 7:30 sharp. As previously announced, the ob ject of these entertainments is to supplement the incidental fee of $1.00 per family, so as to make it unnecessary to draft npon of the common school fund in aid the expenses incident to the operation of the city schools, such as janitor, fuel, purchase of ink, chalk, eras ers, brooms, etc. A handsome Krauich & Bach piano has been loaned for the occa sion by the Medine Music House of New Orleans. MOUNT CARMEL CONVENT. This deservedly popular institu tion of learning has likewise pre pared a very select and entertaining program for the afternoon of the 8th, which will be rendered at the Con vent hall beginning at 2 o'clock.
