EDUCATIONAL. [Selections from Louisiana School Review | Boec&xr-z SiCxx«f<»ocee'McaccA.>^: A CONVERSATION. two teachers. 1. I make my main objects to make pood spellers, good writers, good readets. and quick at figures. 2. I cannot say that 1 make those my main objects. I look at the school as a community; I try to have all cheerful and happy; to have all industrious; to have ft! spirit of helpfulness; to scorn meanness; to be interested in the great achievements of the human race; to want to find out about the world they live in ; to aim to be in a better and more advantageous position to-day than yesterday. 1. But how about the spelling, the reading, the writing, and the. arithmetic! It seems to me you are leaving those out entirely. The parents will insist on your teaching them. 2. I*et us take one thing at a time. Which is more likely to learn arithmetic, the happy pupil or the unhappy oneT 1. Why, the happy one, of course. And I do all I can to make the school-room pleasant. 2. Don't you think of that all the timef 1. I suppose so. 2. Then it is a main object with you as with ine. I consider the rending, writing, etc., as the results ; of industry, of well-directed labor, j and so try to promote industry. I try to concentrate effort on the same things you do. 1. Hut why do you try to have tliem helpful. 2. A school is a community; and ; when persons live in communities their feelings are naturally aroused ; those feelings must have expres sion ; to repress them would stop their progress in reading and other studies. Yon know the motto of the New Kducation is"Let the entire nature be addressed—body, mind, and ronl." 1. Iu other words, you try to get up a state of development, and ex pect that the pupils will learn to read, etc., incidentally. 2. Not entirely so. t have a course of duties and labors to he performed, as readiug, writing, etc., but it is the spirit with which they are performed that I am con cerned about. Yon see the school in au environment that may lift theui up and inake them nobler and stronger. Thousands learn to read and «re just an low ns before—they read the "yellow" journals and are perfectly satisfied. 1. Yes, I know that. I some times think it would be ab well if some did not know how to read. What can be done in arithmetic to form character f That does not seem so easy 2. I encourage cheerfulness ; set so may problems, have thein do them neatly, work faster to-day than yesterday, and appeal to their reason, repress any meanness, and give them fall freedom. 1. Yes, so do I; bnt why free dornt 2. Because man as he rises tends towards freedom. I mean by that to aet in accordance with their own motives and impulses, and not ac cording to mine. 1. I hold them to the rules. 2. I try to have them make their own rules, t let them go from •eat to seat, or whisper, only ask ing them to, bear in mind not to distnrb others. 1. My pnpils would misuse such liberty. Don't yours roam aronnd and oanse tronblet 2. They did at first, but they bave learned to nse their liberty •nd now do not often whisper. It kin great thing to put responsibility on them 1. Bnt don't yon often feel they sake poor progress in readings take spelling, for example. Don't yon find they fail to spell a word they ought to be able to spellf 2. Tea, that will oooar, bnt the only thing I try is to rouse a spirit of cheerful iudnstry and set them to work on the proper things, and then if they foil 1 don't worry. I. I think I have got some ideas from this talk ; I shall try to put them in praotice.-—iVad'l Teacher. ▲ friend to everybody ia a friend to nobody.—Proverb. nebptMsUg Twelve years ago J. W.
