OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF IBERIA PARISH AND TOWN OF NEW IBERIA LOUISIANA OIL PROSPECTS. Prof. Carneristi, the noted petro leum expert, talking on Louisiana oil prospects to a Picayune man recently, said: "I believe,"' said the professor, "that the Louisiana field will prove to be better than the Texas field immediately in the vicinity of Beaumont. The Beaumont field seems to be exceedingly circum scribed in its limit, and it may take, with the present unsciintifie meth ods, a long time to discover anoth er field in Texas equal to it. "I do not feel that there is quite as much doubt as usual about, the Louisiana field. This field, to my mind, offers larger inducements for investment and greater promise for the future than does that of Beau mont, by long odds. The surface indications are fully as good, the geological formation is better, and the oil so far discovered is of supe rior quality. One thing that seems to me particularly encouraging is that the surface indications are dis tributed over an immense amount of territory, and actual drilling fol lowing these indications has pro duced most excellent results. "Take the Ause-la-Butte well, for instance. We will leave the question as to whether it did spout some time ago or not. Upon that point, I prefer to remain silent. There is certainly a fine deposit of oil at that point; the owners will put down a well in another place for reasons best known to them, and I will say now that there is no question as to the result. The Jennings weli struck one of the finest deposits of oil in the world and spouted. It was a failure on account. of the mishap of the driller, which caused the pipe to buckle and the hole to be a failure. There is no question about die deposit of oil at that point. The same is true of quite a number of other places which I might name, some of which will be indicated in the report which I am now preparing upon the Lou isiana field. "Speaking of the Louisiana oil, it might be well to state it is of much better quality than the Beau mont oil, being almost exactly sim ilar to the Corsicana product, which has been refined for a number of years with great success. One of the greatest lines in which our oil will be used throughout the world will be in the production of gas. It is the finest gas oil which has ever been discovered. There was some doubt at first whether it could be used for the manufacture of a fixed gas, but that doubt has been definitely settled in theaffrma tive. Dr. -Henry Froehling of Rich mond, Va., and myself have made exhaustive tests, and Dr. Froehling has patented a process for the con version of this oil into gas. The entire body of the oil, including the bituminous conteut can be converted into gas, even including in this the fixed carbon, which, by a high de gree of heat and perfect mixture at extreme temperatures, adds mate rially to its illuminating quality. The only residue is about 1 percent. The Oldest and Best S. S. "I would say that the Louisiana field has another great advautage which the Texas field has ubt. The Standard Oil Company will be en abled to enter here and take part in the distribution of your product. I may not be understood in saying this, but neither is the Standard Oil Company understood. It is really only a distributor, and as such its entry here will be highly beneficial. "I do not know of my own know ledge why the Standard Oil Com pany has kept its wells at Sulphur plugged up during all these years. I do know that those wells are there, and that they would be mag nificent producers if opened. The Staudard Oil Company does not care to become a producer on a small scale, but. wishes to play the same role here as it does elsehcre —that of a distributor solely. In this the Standard Oil Company wonld be a great benefit to this sec tion, and I have every reason to be lieve that it is merely a matter of time when the development is suffi cient to induce that company to en ter the field as a distributor, thus enabling small companies with small capital to avail themselves of facilities requiring the investment of many millions. Colonel Hood, after the death of his father, was adopted and raised by a wealthy New York man.
