Burke, of New Iberia, and several other gentlemen from there and other poiuts, met yesterday at the St. Charles Hotel to arrange for the final cousolidation of the Terrebonne oil and gas interests. The meeting took place in Prof. Caracristi's room, as his advice was sought to direct the matter, and the final deal was made by which the consolidation was consummated. About 50,000 acres were em braced in the deal, the land beiug controlled by five different com panies which have heretofore oper ated separately. Phil H. Mentz, au attorney of this city, was also present, he beiug interested iu some of the companies, and legal adviser for the consolidation. The plan is to pool all the lands in one com pany, and it is stated that they ex pect to sell an interest to a syndi cate of northern capitalists that is now organizing for the purpose of developing the gas and oil in the section. The gentlemen left last night for the laud, with Prof. Car acristi, who will make a thorough survey and report upon the situa tion, he having already made a preliminary report that virtually settles the question, so far as the consolidation is concerned. One of the gentlemen was seen before he left last night, and asked to talk about the prospects and plans of the big company. "We will have the greatest oil and gas proposition in the world," said he, "and oui plans are to make the most of it. We will drill a number of wells at such poiuts as shall be located for us by the sur vey that we are about to have made, and the wells already drilling will be continued, so that there shall be no delay. We will operate a pipe Hue to New Orleans aud sell fuel gas, aud, if arrangements can be made, which now seem probable, we will also sell illuminating gas. With the perfect combustion of Ihe natural gas it had little illuminating value under the old systems of il lumination by gas, but with the methods now perfected by which an incandescent mantle is utillized, the greater the heat the better the illuminating power, and as the natural gas has a considerable ad vantage in this respect over the manufactured article, we will have the finest illuminant, as well as fuel, obtainable. Nobody will talk about buying crnde petroleum for fuel when as perfect a fuel is obtainable as can be had by the use of natural gas, and so we thiuk that onr gas will displace oil, just as oil is displacing coal. There no doubt that the Ter rebonne field is the greatest natural gas reservoir on earth. It extends for about ten miles along the Terre boune bayou aud Lafourehe, and jets of it can be seen all along, throwing the water out of the bay ons to a height of 18 inches to 2 feet, and at times much higher. It is merely a matter of locating the main deposits and drilling down to them to get the gas in unlimited quantities, and this we will do at once. There is plenty of oil there, too, and we will get the oil when we want it, but the gas is what we are after now, and with it we ex pect to make an industrial révolu tion in New Orleans. "Our pipe line will be only forty miles long, whereas the pipe lines of natural gas that are making Pittsbnrg to-day are more than 300 miles iu length, and the industries of Indianapolis are being supplied with fuel gas from wells more than 150 miles away. These and many other cities have been made manu facturing centers by reason of hav ing supplies of natural gas, and we are expecting to make this enter prise work for the good of New Or leans in the same way." With active work in the Terre bonne field, renewed activity at Anse-la-Bntte, where three new der ricks are being put up by the More sis and the Gnffey people, and with the resumption of operations soon by the Anse-la-Batte-LeDanois Co., the two fields will soon be thorough ly explored. Soon operations will also begin at Avery's island in this parish, the Minneapolis, Minn., capitalists who have options at this place being on the gronnd8 making ready to begin work as soon as the services of a competent driller can be secured. A dispatch from Orange, refer ring to the new petroleum refinery of the Forward Reduction Co., says "To-day Mr. Sam Hains, local agent for the Forward Reductiou Comp any, has advice by wire that 125 cars of machinery and material have left the factories iu the east, billed to Orauge, Texas. "The company has secured be tween 7,000 and 8,000 acres of land that fronts three miles on Adams Bayou, two miles along Cow Bayou, 10 miles on the Sabine river and nearly three miles above the head of Sabiue lake. A vessel drawiug 40 feet can navigate the Sabine river and the bayous without the necessity of dredging a spadeful of dirt from the channel of either of the three streams. "The lake is shallow, and will re quire deepening, but it is believed that the great sawmill interests combined with friends of the oil re finery, will bring the attention of the committee on rivers and harbors at the meeting of the coming con gress, and that the importance of these industries, added to other ex port business that is sure to seek the quickest route to deep water, will impress congress with the necessity of such appropriation as will assure an ample outlet to the sea. The new company owns two producing wells on Spindle Top and controls theontput of several others, which will amply guarantee it all of the crude oil that will be required iu this great enterprise. The new sulphur well that is be ing put down by the Union Sul phur Co. at their mines near Sul phur City, in Calcasieu, is down a little more than 200 feet, and iu a fine stratum of oil saud which extends to the sulphur rock and is from 150 to 175 feet thick. So far the drillers have driven one length of 13-inch pipe into this sand aud everything about the der rick is well greased aud the bailer brings up pure oil and saud. In a well about 150 feet south west of the one now drilling and 200 feet northeast of the much talked of gusher, while in this same stratum of oil sand the oil gushed up over the top of the pipe in strong steady flow and was cased off with difficulty.— Lake C. Washington, Nov. 22.—An order has been issued by Secretary Long to the members of the Schley court of inquiry which is considered to be about the most remarkable ever given to a court. He has instructed Admiral Dewey and his associates to prepare, with great care aud accuracy, their own abstract of the testimony taken be fore the court. This order, it is said, is in conformity to au idea of the President. He intends that this abstract, prepared by Admiral Dewey and his associates, shall be the official history of the West In dian naval campaign and the battle of July 3, off Santiago. All other histories and alleged reports of the battle will be discarded, and the testimony that was given before the court is expected to live in history as the official record of the Navy Department. The whole story is compressed by the New Orleans Picayune into a snug and convenient nutshell when it says : "As far as the bat tle of Santiaga is concerned noth iug uow remains obscure or unde termined. There can be not the slightest donbt who fonght and won that battle. It was Schley' flagship that led from start to fin ish, it was his ship that sustained the brnnt of the battle, inflicted the most injnry on the enemy and re ceived the most blows in return and it was finally Schley's ship which drove ashore the last of the Spanish cruisers aud received her surrender. How any set of officers con Id have dared to claim the cred it of the victory for any one else but Schley in the light of the known self-evident facts almost surpasses comprehension.
