Papers and mag wbo have been living in the open.? azines were almost unknown; the They will demand the freedom of 1 settler's life was hard in the ex the out-of-door life, and the broad er scope of individual action which goes with it. .Hie inde pendent life of the scientific farm er will appeal to them as never before, and for their own good and the good of the nation, this -desire should be met in a com prehensive manner. Secretary of the Interior Lane, •with admirable foresight, has worked ont a plan which is both pratieal and desira.ble. At the close of the Civil War there were vast areas of the choicest land whieh had never felt a plow, that tbousanfls of returning soldiers were allotted under the homestead law. That was over fifty years ago, when hundreds of our now well-known Vestern cities and towns had not been .thought of. While there re niais some good unclaimed gov ernment lands in ^various states, its total is a mere garden com pared to what was available then. The problem of supplying pro ductive lands in both our warm and colder climates becomes Une largely of reclamation. Take the swamp and overflowed lands of Florida and 'the (JJaulf States, ané a few other states, <of which there are some 60,000,000 acres of the richest soil. There are also the eut-over lands whiefa still lie waste, and other now barren lands in the far West, rich as the valley of the Nile when water is poured upon it. These three classes of land are all capable of enormous produc tion, once they are reclaimed and tilled. This work of réclamation , would immediately off the indum enta of outdoor activities, and en accomplished, a permanent ML home and occupation to thou Hard Coughs are very painful and irritating. The more you cough, the more you have to cough. You weed a soothing, healing remedy to relieve the irrita tion. One of the best is BALLARD'S HOREHOUND S SYRUP It Is a Splendid Remedy fer Soreness In tHe Threat and Lungs o Ballard's Horehound Syjup checks inflammation in the lungs, relieves tight feeling, quiets irrita tion in the air passage and enables the patient to breathe freely and comfortably. A few doses clears the voice, loosens phlegm and restores healthy conditions in the air passages. Keep a bottle in the house for prompt use when needed. A taken in time saves a world of misery. Good for die children as well as adults. ,r.i ST. LOU», NO. treme, and in some places in act ual jeopardy. Under the proposed plan all this is to be reversed. The govern ment would.,finance and engineer the reclamation ; would build roads and farm buildings; would equip with necessary machinery and stock; would establish rural delivery. Where the pioneer jlid everything J by the hardest work, scientific firming would reduce manual labor to a minimum; where he had to wait several years to more from his sod hut into something better, under the new plan the settler would com meiiee with ewery essential to comfort and success. With these new districts fully settled as fast as developed, and with automo biles, the buyer of these re claimed lands would be anything but isolated or remote. New towns will spring up to supply storw, and with so large a per centage of young people, condi tions will be ideal. The above plan is an expanmon of one al ready used with success in some other ^countries. Nobody is to receive something for northing. The government would use the returned soldior and pay him; as fast as one re claimed section was completed, and reatfy for occupancy, farms would be sold on eaçy-pavment plans, the payments extended over a very long term of years if necessary. With their natural enterprise, #the large portion of buvers would work out of debt in a few years. While the actual work of re clamation would not be under taken during the war. the details of the plan should be, so that, im mediately on return. to civilian' life, those who desired fto go into the reclamation work oould do so. To accomplish this Secretary Lane is askrng Congress for a few hundreds ©Î thousands of dollars. Seldom "hws a more deserving ap propriation been requested. w.• s. s. Easy Way to Stop Waste of Food. Probably there is no easier nor more effec tive method of exterminating rats than Steam's Electre Paste, a ientific product that has been used a successfully by the U. S. Government in its different cam paigns against the rat. A small box, costine onlv a few cents, will usually completely free the house from rats and mice.
