ie True Democrat. blished Every .Saturday. i. LEAKE, JR.,....... .Proprietor. 2ATU1tDAY, JULY 25, 1896. the Famous Gun Trick. c Secret of "Cattlching Rnllcts" No Longer a Mystery. h[0st people haIve been 11101- or s puzzhved to know how the man to pioses belore six riflemen, withi tted l gulls, tnallages to "CatchI e bullets." The trick lhas often ent performed by I[errnsT1lon and sers of his kind, and1 always with )elief that while it twas a trick, it Is yet utiathounable. Friederick tiucroft, himself a ' professional, 'es the whole situp away. Mr. alnctrolt 5nys: "To begin witllh, as recently (done, Was per)ortuedt by the alid oft six )liers under the commanud of a =rgeant. At the rise of the cut, tiii the squad mnarched upon the t;ge 1and took a position in obliqtue no on the right, wheni after they ad beeni brought to attention antd rder arms, the sergeant crossed ho stage to the left third entrance or the lassumed Ipurpose of deposit tg his gunt and taking fromt the Itei .placc ai salver on which the jallets were to be placed. This salver waIs in the form of all ordi nary waiter labout 6 by 12 tches' itnd atbout 1 jnch deep. In the cen tre there walt a semall hole or well l;-rge enougttt to hcltl six caIrti-idge s. Coteal('Led in the interior af t.isii sa:l tic's'er " w noither ctit' n nualt'tiirtllt `1 "( ictiy the same size as ithe expo tied 1 tweil, containing six bliank cartridg es, wLich were hidden from view. tc 01 i"Underneath this salver and con- r1 cealed by the band in which tlh el sergeant carried the salver was a small peg containing the two coin- 9 partmentt. The salver was taken by the sergeant to the conmmittee, whlio (leposite(d therein the six buiil lets which had bceien loaded and sealed. The sergeant thenI passed among the audience and various persons took the cartridges fromn fheo salver aud placed nuutrks upon ,the bullets. They were then depos ited back in the well. The sergeant then marched onii the stage with the ( slver' at aiIm's Clength, lbut as ihe was crossing the platlfilm he moved the computinents dlowni anil (ho blaniik cartridges up into tihe pIlace occupied by the loaded cartridges. The loaded cartridges naturailly were then covered up and niothing was exposed but the blanks. This salver he :thell handed to the sol diers, and each one took a cartridge. This is where the mystery comes in, because everybody in the audience tvad ready to swear that the salver with the cartridges had never left their silght; tha:t the sergeant had held it at arm's length and that each soldicer :hadt taken a cartridge theretrolw and heldl it aloft. What they failed to notice was that the soldiers held the cartridges with the rim up, anid not the bullet end up. "After thesoldiere had taken their cartridges, the sergeant crossed to the third left entrance for the pur pose of returning the salver and se curing his gun. This is where the fine work of the trick comes in. The minute lie deposits the salver, two confedtuerates, who are in the third entrance, take the cartridges, extract the bullets and put them on .a plate iwlich has been heated so as .to mtamke the lullets feel warm. The performer, who has been stand ing in the centre of the stage all this time, then walks over to his entrance for the purpose of securing the plate upon which he proposes to catch the bullets. In the meau time t ' e soldiers had loaded their thile g ns with the blank cartridg ;i and marlead to the platform in the auditorium and faced about; ready to fi.e. The performer se Iured thei plate ail d Iullets at tLh I saine time, anId conIcealing thle bu C lets in the pamnu of hiM hanid he held 6 the plate before him iand nodded to It thlit iwergeutit to giv re tIhe no miannt to fire, whlich wats done and the pelr former tIhen turlied the pilate ovel E with the bullets on it amid great I applause. I The greatest care is taken to sce that the soldiers have no amniuni tioni of any kind, anid as there are but six -loaded cartridges in usc, and as the m agicial does not give the signal to the sergeanit to fire until he had received the six bullets it is easy to be seen that there can )beuo danger conlected with tihe feat, as he has the bullets in his hand before the soldiers fire. "When I saw the amount of space devoted by the papers to thlis tent and noted with what excite mlent (le audience witnessed the act, I conid not help thinking with Puck: 'What fools these mortals tbe.'" THIRD.-Give your opinion as to the difference between its strength and action, and the strength and action of the "Livcr Regulator" made by J. H. Zeilin & Co. and the "Black Draught" made by Chattanooga Medicine Co.; both of which have sold to dealers at 0 or 7 cents per package, net, and should retail at. not over 10 or 12 cents, if consumers are not imposed upon, while our Original article cannot be sold at less than 25 cents per package, as we have too much re gard for human life to use cheap drugs In any of our medicines. The reason is plain; Zeilin & Co. and the old proprietors of "Black Draught" were both enjoined from deceiving the public by using the words constituting our trade name; there fore, look out that some dealer (not knowing you are posted) don't sell you some cheap package at a profit of 800 or 400 per cent., instead of our Genuine "Dr. M.
