THE f*T. MARY BANNER WEEKLY. Franklin, St. Mary Parish, La W. H. LATHAM, Editor and Prooriotor. Official Journal of the Parish School Hoard, the Police Jury and the Town of Franklin. We are not responsible for the view? and opinions of correspondents ap pearintr in these columns Entered at the Postoffice as Second Class Mail Matter. SATURDAY. MAY 29. 11-20. Let Us Have It. Mayor Lauve is considering the advisability of installing a filtra tion plant whereby pure, water can be furnished in ample quantity for the use of the people, lie pro poses, so we understand, to call and hold a mass meeting of the citizens to decide on this impor tant matter. Mr. Lauve wants t-. have the support of healthfu 1 , public seotiment which he ha always had in promoting in the past improvements that hav added to the c'mmon weal. While the mass meeting is not abso lutely necessary—(the people trust Mayor Lauve implicitly); yet it is the proper thing to do that the people may fully understand the proposition, its purposes and evi dent efficts. Every public ser vant, who consults with the good people freely, seldom ever tails in the carrying forward of a good measure. We hope the mace meeting will be largfly attended; the largei the better; the more certain will come the needed improvement It will be accompanied with some expense, but the burden on the people will be but little greater than It is now. The Frisco Rail road tax, 3 12 mills, passes away this year. The extra burden ot the town will be very little. Be that as it may, if the improve ment is proper and necessary, the people will support it be the bur den what it may in all reason. ! j ! I ! : ' j I See the "Whiskey Torpedo! Whiskey is a great commodity Its friends resort to rare ingenuity to get into dry territory. The lat est thing is the w hiskey torpedo, and they are being used between Canada and Michigan. 1 hrec electric torp does of 1C, and 25 gallon c-ipacity are ised. They are made of copper and propelled by propellers ac tuatrd by storage batteries They submerge, and require about five minutes to coes the river, wh-re they are emptied ard shot back A new torpedo cf 50 gallons ca pacity is bei ig built Wc are not eurpri-id Maybe the story is true, but then perhaps not. The Speaker of the House of Representatives announced the personnel of the different commit tees of that body last Tuesday The appointments were wisely made. A "square deal" has been given. The appointments have been made on merit, having al ways tne best interests of the State in view. A similar course has been pursued by the Lieuten ant-Governor in the appointment of the Senate committees. No S artisan spirit has been evinc d y either of these officers. They had no friends to favor, bu' each of them served the State faith fully in the appointments he made. The League of Nations Council Is about to take up the question of disarmament. It will probably be busy for several years. When an office goes seeking a man, it always finds him at home, with the door open and a "Wel come" mat before it. "Is the high cost of living to come down with a rush?'' asks the Baltimore Sun, just as if P really believed there was a possi bility^ something of the sort. And the man who made a cork ing good shoe that retailed for §3 a pair became Governor of a great State. The manufacturer who re stores that price for equally good shoes will be in dang- r of beiug elected to prrside for Ufa. It i* said by informed persons that Belgium is recuperating m ire rapidly than any other country ravaged by ifar. The statistics given indicate the truth of the statement. The coal production now is about oinety per cent, of ifee normal production iu 1913. 1 OUI (VUtii. cn'en In ano'her column of the Ban ner we publi-h a notice issued to the property holders of Franklin by the Board of Health, in which it require« them to screen their cisterns and all water receptacles on nr about their premises in ac cordance with Ordinance No, 119. This movement is made as a health measure, and should be promptly obeyed. The vigilance { the President of the Board of Health, Dr. B. W. Smith, is high y commendable. The premises ! cf the property- holders in ttu town will be inspects! at an early date ar.d all persons who hav violated the law will be rigidly prosecuted. Therefore, let eac! ! property owner get busy at once j and tea to it that they have com ! plied with the letter of the ordi nance if he has not already done jso, before the inspectors arrive I Let us wiilingiy j un together and do all we can to uphold and assis the wa'chful Board of Health it preserving the health of our towr ! and the comfort of our people. : Let u 3 do it, not only btciuse it ' must be done, but we do it becaus< it is right and it is our duty to d< j it. 'JITNEY' NOW WITHOUT HONOR Humble Nickel Can Hardly Be Classed as Real Money in These Spend thrift Days. Once upon a time a nickel was real money—but those days are gone. In the days of our youth, watermel ons could he purchased for the sum of five cents, hut now not even the transparent slice can he obtained for this sum. Enough bananas could he bought for five cents to give three boys indiges tion, hut that was long ago. There was a time when small boys were wont to do chores around the home for the coveted nickel—hut not now. Who can forget the man who used to walk Into the cigar store and say, in a loud voice, "Give mo a good nickel cigar." There was a time when a nickel bought a loaf of bread, or a dish of ice cream, paid for a shoe shine and oven made a sizeable tip. Some of the old citizens, in their more reminiscent moods, can recall those days—or at least they say they can. Hut gradually, one by one, the uses of Hie "jitney" passed away. It would buy nothing to eat, nothing to drink, unless reinforced by the once despised penny, until only a ride on a street car remained to be secured in exchange for the nickel. And then the street railway company followed in the wake of a long anil illustrious procession of profiteers. CHILD GIVEN UNIQUE NAME American Girl to Go Through Life With YWCA as One of Her Appellations. "vVe've named her Y. W. C. A. 1' saldla proud young mother as she dis played her two-months-old baby to a group of girls at one of the many ! Y. W. C. A. branches In New York city 1 recently. So "Alice YWCA Stamhou- j lides" is a real child, the possessor of j a unique name which will always he ! a reminder of her mother's first days | in a strange country. When Mrs. ! Lulu Stamboulldes, a pretty Rouma nian girl, first came to the United States nearly two years ago her young Greek husband, whom she had con-,-' here to marry, took her immediately to the Harlem branch of the Y. W. C. A. in New York city to learn the American language, customs and ideals. He himself had found this training at the Y. M. O. A. Mrs. Stain boulides entered English, art, cooking and sewing classes and s oon beca me one or me most popular members of the branch. Then when little Alice arrived the father insisted that her middle name should lie "Y. VY. C. A." —and so it is—and Alice Stamboul ides can hold her own with Mary Armistice Smiths and John Pershing Joneses of the day. Cherish Enthusiasm. To keep to the forefront you must not lose your enthusiasm. Charge your boy dreams with man experience and watch the world gasp at your progress. When the visions of youth set the skill of maturity to definite tasks there's bound to lie ringing achievement that will last. The sober old world will scold and scoff, but it can never har ness the spur of youth. Dreams bred of surging desire and chaffing enthu siasm are hound to find fulfillment whatever the cost. And best of all the fulfillment means blessing to the world. We all profit by every new gift to the world. Gifts are the product of dreams and visions. It's the spirit born of youth that provides for the world's progress. Keep young by dreaming and doing to the extent of your power. It's a spur to power. ! 1 j ! Dodo's Big Mistake. The dodo—its name today a syno nym for "hack number"—became ex tinct owing to the circumstance that it was good to eat. Not being able to fly. its clumsy waddle gave it no means of escape. Sailors stopping at the island of Mauritius, to which it was native, killed it for food. Not even a skeleton of the dodo now exists, and until recently It was sup posed there was oi|fr one picture of the bird—made by an artist who vis ited Mauritius in Idl'd. But it now ap pears that living specimens were taken to Amsterdam at about the same period, and beautiful painted portraits of them have turned up. One of the latter is of a white dodo (not an albino), whi.-li presumably repre sented a distinct variety, the ordinary type having plumage that was mostly gray.—Detroit Journal. tséat mm to it.
