Conover, of Jennings, who has holdings in the Welsh field, writes that he expects to begin improving and developing it at once. Four car loads of piping arrived here this morning for the well to he sunk by the Southern Pacific railroad. The machinery is expected in a few days. C. H. Howze, of I owison, Miss., who has eighty acres in the Welsh oil field, is here this week for the purpose of platting his land. He is also mak ing arrangements to sink a well on his holdings. The JOURNAL is reliably informed that another derrick will in all proba bility be built next week near No. 3 of the Welsh Oil and Development Com pany. Further information will be given next week. The derrick for the Denver-Beau "mont Oil Company has been erected and the machinery and three cars of Y: piping have arrived. The work of boring will begin as soon as the ma chitiery can be placed in position. J. de Goeyen, Jr., a very wealthy business man of Amsterdam, in the INetherlands, was here this week in V v dompany with a party of Port Arthur b~ usiness men investigating the Welsh Sfield. These gentlemen are members aOf the Denver-Beaumont Oil Company, A',and have acquired an entire section of ), lapd for development .purposes. Mr. Goeyen stated that he would build a refinery as soon as the Wood well was brought in. , W. L. Smith, of Welsh, La., who is assisting in putting down an oil well '. for the Denver-Beaumont Oil and Pipe .Line Company. was here Saturday. f.:r. Smith seems to think prospects ` very bright for the Welsh field. He ihi~s quite a wide experience in the oil gwell business as he has been engaged '"in this line for some time. He helped ;:bring in several fine gushers on Spin dle top and also finished up several ewlls in Corsicana, Tex.-American. ,i'riday's Times says: "Scott Clay ea.d driller on the Welsh oil well, Eas here today, and in conversation lnregard to the Welsh well said: t'rhave completed the drilling of the well and now have the casing in oil asnd of fine quality, with one of the h.viest pressures of gas I ever saw i any well. A large number of people from Welsh and vicinity went to Lake Charles Saturday to see itingling's circus. J. D. Cline has bought of C. It. Cline six lots in block A and four lots in block B, Cline's addition to Welsh, consideration $600. N. C. Craig sold to A. E. Parent six lots in block one, Craig's subdivision to the town of Welsh, consideration $436.50. C. E. St. Clair, near Lacasine, has lost three horses within the past two weeks with a peculiar malady similar to fever. C. E. Carr sold to C. E. Taggart lots 10 and 11, block 1, in the Jarrett Cooper subdivision to the town of Welsh, consideration $275. Car load of Rice Sacks just in. Paul W. Daniels. F. E. Arceneaux left for Vic toria, Texas, Wednesday evening to spend a few day, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Arceneaux. W. R. Dicks returned Sunday from New Orleans where he had been taking the examination before the State Board of Pharmacists. J. M. Hutchins, of Lake Charles, formerly a druggist in this city, has accepted the position of manager of the Welsh Furniture Co., Limited. The ladies aid society of the M. E. church will give a sale of their work in connection with a basket supper in the near future. Hlon. A. P. Pujo, of Lake Charles, u as elected to congress from this dis trict by a majority of about 3,500. Mr. Pujo is an able, clean man and will make his mark in congress. While out hunting ducks last Thurs day, C. E. St. Clair, of near Lacasine, happened to a very painful accident. He was crawling up on a flock of ducks and in some manner the barrel of the gun was plunged into the dirt. In rcmoving the particles the gun was accidentally discharged, completely tearing away the little linger of his left hand. He came to \Velsh and had his wound dressed and is at present suffering very little pain. Mrs. F. J. West and Mrs. J. W. Bower left Monday for Pollock, La., as delegates Lo the State W. C. T. U. convention which is now in session in that city. J. T. Walker left Tuesday for New Orleans to enter the Keely institute for the treatment of the liquor habit. Rev. A. W. Turner, of Lake Arthur accompanied him to the city. There is said to be quite a demand for real estate in the vicinity of the oil field. With the startinsr to boring of a few more wells oil land will get a hump on itself, so to speak. 1t. B. Knott and family and Proctor Knott returned yesterday morning from a week's stay in Texas. They are vet undecided as to where they will locate. James Bowen, head driller for the Denver-Beaumont oil company, has began the erection of a neat five-room cottage on one of the lots recently purchased in the Cooper-Jarrett sub division. Bourgeois & Hebert have let the coutract for a two-story building at the corner of north Railroad avenue and Polk street. The building will be 3ti6x50 feet and will be completed about the 15th of next. J. M. Maddux and family left for Ft. Scott , Kan., to reside. Mr. Mad dux made a failure in a rice crop this season and decided to forever cast his lot in the state of sand storms and grasshoppers. "Send in your items of news when they are fresh," says the Salisburg, (Mo.) Press. "We don't like to pub lish a birth after the child is weaned, a marriage after the honeymoon is over, a death after the widow is mar ried again, nor the notice of an enter tainment after the job work is done elsewhere and the editor is charged for admission."' The young men are at the front. Look about you in any place of busi ness, in any court and note how far in the majority are the young men every where. As the old fellows drop out the ranks close up instantly. There are the weak in youth as well as the weak of yellow years, but there are great things ripening on all sides for the grasp of strong young men.-Ex. TRev. J. B. Gonzales, of Jennings, occupied the pulpit at the Congrega tional church last Sunday and deliv ered two eloquent and forceful sermons to good congregations. In the after noon he made an excellent talk to the men and boys whichwaswell attended. On Monday evening he gave a lecture on "The Problem of Life," which he presented to his hearers in his usual clear and forceful manner. Murder at Roanoke. While a gang of negroes were en gaged in a game of craps at liodnoke last Sunday a dispute arose between John Itig's and Thornton Collins two of the participants which resulted in Collins being shot by Riggs and in stantly killed. Both men had been losing heavily during the day and words passed be tween them, whereupon Riggs left his opponllent. but returned shortly after wards and took ui) the discussion with C'ollins. In a lit o(f rage Riggs pulled his revolver, a 44 calibre and deliber ately shot his victini through the heart. The iurilerler is now in jail with two witnesses who saw the d(eed.
