With the return of the Shooting Sea son, there is one question many a father will have to face: "Papa, may I have a gun this year?" One father will say "Yes'' another, "Wait till you'reten:" another, "Wait till you are twelve:" another, perhaps fourteen. For our part we would say, "Let him have it when he's ten; or, if he has developed ahead of his age, per haps a little earlier." There are countless men today who began to shoot about as soon :is they had strength enough to raise a gun to their shoulders, Almost without ex ception such are men of quick decision, actiý,, and assurance. The gun has a great deal to do with fostering these th:ee qualities, and we say begin it C,, I .i it ro new theory: the readers of this paper have had it very ably presented in the announcements of the J. New York, Decemberl.-The World says: In the mayoralty election con test the count of the protested and void ballots thus far makes about an even break for Mayor McClellan and William R. Hearst, and they stand practically where they did when the contest began. There have not been ten votes gained or lost by either side although nearly all the void and pro tested ballots have been examined and ruled on by Justice Giegerich. Immediately after the election, when It was announced that in the greater city there were between 7000 and 8000 void and protested ballots, the Hearst managers declared their candidate had been counted out through these ballots. They declared a recount of these excluded votes would show that Tammany had done its crooked work in throwint our votes and that Hearst would be elected.
