Vendig, who is a broker for i the Gulf .ice Mill and has been visit ing the rice belt for the past month, left the latter part of the week for his home in San Juan, Porto Rlico. Mr. Vendig is an American who became disgusted with the "sweat system ' and because of his feling against the wrong in it, resigned an excellent po sition in his father's factory. He then collected samples of various lines and started for the West Indies, after hav ing studied Spanish for six months. SHis success has been a signal one, last year his coummissions amn(outing to well up in the thousands. Besides handling rice, he also represents the Armour products and Ballard's flour. Last winter while in P'orto lHico, I'hil ip Miller, then manager of th, Gulf Mill, placed the account of the mill with Mr. Vindig, and this transaction resulted in a business relation which occasioned his recent visit to \Welsh. First Rie' of Season sold in New (r leanii at $6.0O per Blarrel. New ()rlean;. La, .1 uly I. .\, an item of interest to v(Ir read- t ers, I heg to report that this (Tues- f' day) mornling, at 10 o'clock, there was, t sold on the floor of the New Orleans Board of T'rade, the first new crop 11 e rice marketed this year. The lot con sited of 39 sacks of well matured, h well cured white Honduras, raised at s New Iberia, and brought $6.00 per a barrel, at auction. No t as much prem- a ium as is usually paid for first offer- s: ings, probably on account of size of t' lot, The rice was worth .35.00 0o to day's market. Ieceipts here will not be steady for two weeks yet, but bar- w ing bad weather, the mills will all he tl running by the 5th of August. The Teche country and Abbeville district HI are very early and will probably mark. st et the most of their Honduras rice ti right along with the Mississippi val- h) ley crop, probably thirty days in ad- Ib vance of Calcasieu parish.
