WALDEN'S BUSINESS COLLEGE
Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Prof. L. R. Walden, City:
Dear Sir:-In order that young people may know what your school.did
for me, and WHAT IT ('AN DO FOR THEM, and what I think of it, I will
say, that, after taking the course in bookkeeping, Penmanship, Arithmetic
and other English branches TEN WEEKS, you placed me in a good position.
I had never studied Bookkeeping before entering your school, and not
withstanding the fact that the books of the firm for whom I worked WERE
IN VERY BAD SHAPE, I had no trouble in straightening them out and in
keeping them correct. MY SALARY WAS RAISED at the beginning of the
second month, and again the third month. I really believe that your school
IS THE BEST Business College in the South.
I would advise young men and young women to take the combined Busi
ness and Shorthand course, and I am confident that they WILL MAKE NO
MISTAKE IN SELECTING your school. Your courses are thorough and
practical, teachers competent and conscientious; equipment first-class in
every respect, EXPENSES VERY LOW, and you have demonstrated tim
and again that for $100 total cost, one can become a very good bookkeepe
or stenographer in FOURTEEN WEEKS or less.
Young people, you will find no better or cheaper school than yours.
Yours truly,
JAMES WILLIS.

CHICAGO'S REBELLIOUS PEOPLE.
In discussing the war which Chicago
high school pupils have been waging
against the board of education's at
tempted abolition of the school sect
societies and fraternities, Rev. Frank
G. Faith, pastor of a Congregational
church, in a sermon delivered in that
city Sunday, charged parents with be
ing too lenient and recommended the
use of the barrel stave. "If parents
side with pupils in defiance of school
regulations," observed the speaker,
"how can we expect other than that
our future citizens will become defiers
of the law?"
It is quite evident that Rev. Faith,
whose very name implies that he has
built on a sure foundation, has studied
Bible with profit, and that he has the
genius to apply its truths to present
day needs. "He that spareth his rod
hateth his son; but he that loveth him
chasteneth him betimes;" "the rod
and reproof giveth wisdom; but a child.
left to himself bringeth his mother to,
shame," wrote Solomon, commonly
accounted the wisest man that everE
lived.
There has been within recent years
an epidemic of defiance to the consti
tuted authorities in schools and col
leges all over the land, and as Rev.
Faith suggests, if something is not
done to arrest the: tendency, we may
expect nothing better than for the
generation that is to succeed the pres
ent one to be a nation of law defiers.
The rules and regulations of the
school room are to the pupils what
the laws of the land are to the respon
sible citizens of the country, and en
couraging their defiance is just as
sure in the ultimate to lead to lawless
ness in the one instance as in the
other. No parent can afford to en
courage his offspring in defying the
law of the school room any more than
any other citizen can afford to en
courage defiance of the law of the
land. In either case the harvest will
be woe.
"Perhaps it is because rod and
slipper are out of commission," ob
serves the Chicago Record-Herald dis
cussing the situation in the Chicago
public schools, "that American chil
dren have the reputation of being the
most impudent and disrespectful in
the world. It is weak or negligent or
wrong-headed parents who are re
sponsible for much of the disorder in
the schools. Teachers are kept under
a restraint that is perhaps wise, but
it is unfair to burden them with the i
parents' duties and to increase the 1
burden, as is so often done, by en
eouraging insubordination. That they
should help with the training in mor
als and manners is true. It is too
much to ask of any teacher, however,
that she should do all the training
and overcome the opposition of par
ents at the same time. "
The Journal is of the opinion that
the advice given by the Chicago
Record-Herald and Rev. Faith is wise
and could be acted upon with profit
by parents and teachers outside of
Chicago.
