S. & P., is a Bond-ed road. ir The war in Europe still hangs T fire. The Sunday edition of the New b York Star is now a sixteen page 1 paper. n What has become of the Nicholls ' boom? It appears to have quieted i down considerebly. A boom is reported to have a broken loose, and to bIe making in e the direction of Tallulah. tI Morris Ranger the greatest cot ton speculator in the world died in New York Sunday. Several attempts to assassinate g the Czar of Russia have been made recently, but without success. The short haul rates should be based on those of the long haul, and not the reverse as is now done. The proposed bridge across the river at Cairo will be three miles I long, and is estimated to cost The inter-state commerce law needs vigorous enforcement, in- I stead of conceding too much to the railroads. The country papers are mighty slow about opening up on the rail roads. The Tiaus will have to furnish another sample article shortly. The New York Herald, now that Sherman and Blaine have started each a boom, has dug up a Cleve land boom and started it on its I weaving way. Lieut. John W. Danenhower of Artic fame committed suicide by shooting himself through the head, at the Anhapolis Naval Academy last Wednesday morning. Mr. F. C. Baum huas purchased the Book Stationery and Notion department of the People's Book and music 8tore of V'icksburg, and will continue the business on a larger scale than befere. ISTIAITI P0R 167. . It was presumed that the long haul could take care of itself but it does not seem able to do so, and the short haul is catching what Paddy gave the drum, while the long haul is gcting the same thing only nore so. As a matter of fact the railroads P with their customary unscrupulous ness have increased their rates all along for both long and short dis tances. Their object is clearly to to make the law odious, but they are overreaching therrselves, and making themselves odious instead. They will drive every state into having a railroad commission, and it will be a commission that will be disposed to be aggressive to wards the railroads, and that will force some justice from them. The V., 8. & P., with its usual grasping miserlyness, displayed no hesitation in getting out a new tarifand stood prepared to advaun e the rates, the very day the new law went into effect. There was no red tape about that. They jumped at it like a trout at a min now, and they have about succeed in making shipments by rail to Tallulah prohibitory. The shortest way out of the dif ficulty, and the easiest is to build by private enterprise, a railway to Millikens Bend. A home railway. One that is intended to be abenefit to this community, and having for its object the saving of money to this section instead of a concern like the V., S. & P., whose object! appears to be to make itself gen erally hated, and at the same time, to wring from its unhappy victims, the last dollar that can by any possibility be extracted from them. Let us have a railway to the Bend, or a freight line, by which we can a get our g'ods hauled. SDIED. Howard C. Currie, on the even e ing of April 20th 1887, at his home in East Carroll Parish.
