MiB SPIRIT OF DAILY EWITS Thee Stride Steadily Owauid le.r Before Their Aesm alatig Realities. During the November term of the Baton Rouge criminal court, out of seventy-two cases there were sixty-seven convictions. Of these fifty-five were for violating the Sunday law, operating slot machimes and shooting craps. Will Moore, a negro who stole the communion service from the Christian Church of Baton Rouge, was seeteaced to seven years in the penitentiary for burglary anad larseny. A robber should beware bow he appropriates sacred things. It is highly gratifying to note that the New Orleans banks re port their cash balanoes as ten per cent above the legal require ments. On the other hand the hanks of New York are short. Speculating in stocks doese' not seem a very safe investment. W. B. Farrar was arrested in Sh8Laeport last week charged with the embezzlement of between $0.-000 and $50,000 from Levi Fowler. He was released on a $.000 bond, signed by several of the prominent citizens of that city. It is a matter of pride and grat ifcation that the men behind the gnus of that splendid war vessel, the Louisiana, in a competitive shoot reeently, won the firet prise for markmaehip. The men get 42.00. the cash prize offered by the National Govern ment. The Atchafayala leve board are building a system of levees along that stream to confine the waters within its banks. This will reclaim thousands of acres of alluvial land compoedtl of san.y loam and decayed vegetable mat ter. making it the most productive ant when open to cultivation that the world holds today. All kind of estimates are being made as to the amount saved to the State by the recent reform lation. Judge J. T. Ker°an - B JBouge places the figurea sta annasl saving of $310,000. This sum is distributed amon the orishes, levee boards, municipal - sd the officers of the State Italf. Rise up and subject the candidates to thi Leausiama catechism of politdal requirements. Beforms have come, but there are others that are needed. Who should have the honor for the re cent laws enacted? No one but the people. This was the inevit able result of placing power in the hands of those to whom it properly belonged.-the sovereign voters. The citizens of a State who east the ballots are the arbit ers of their own government. They select the law-makers and can ,tctate those enactments which will add to the prosperity and good of all., by selecting the men who represent the best inter ests of the people. This is the whole matter in a nutshell. Ex clude from office every mnan who betrays his trust, does not carry out his sworn duty, and the result will be perfection in government, as near as human honesty, truth and virtue can attain it. The people are the source of all power. Let them exervise it properly and they will become its beneficiaries. A Real Wonderland. A reform needed by the State was intiated at the recent extra session of the Legislature by Representative Hunsicker, of Caddo. He favoreis the plan of having it done h~ the several State instituteI. That this ques tion will come before-the regular session of the Legislature is a foregone conclusion. The Baeon Rouge Truth, in dis ewning this question, declares that it cannot be done by the pupil of the State institutions because it requires the best typo. graphical talent from start to nish. I-r~l·pl A DAYLICHT CONFLACRATION Two-Story Residence of C. L. Jones Becomes Prey to Devouring Flames. Last Saturdlay morning the alarm of fire vas sounded by the city hall bell and the usual dis charge of fire arms. It was lo cated at the residlence of Mr. C. L. Jones on Maple street. W'ien the alarm was given the whole building was in a blaze. The residene. was a two-story build ing containing ten rooms. As usual the citizaens hastened to the rescue and succeeded in saving many of the household goods. By heroic efforts they prevented the fire from igniting the home of J. J. Payne on the west, although the wind was partly blowing in that direct ion. The house was es! imated to be worth at least $3,500 and was well stocked with furniture. Mr. Jones carried an Insurance of $1,500 on the house anid $1,000 on the furniture. That saved was considerably damaged by break age. The fatal kitchen flue was the caust of the blaze. VWhen the fire was first discovered it could have been easily extin guished, but at that time of day there was not a man to give assistance. This disaster falls heavy on the family at this time, and the warmest sympathy is expressed for them in their heavy loss. The kitchen flues of a large number of houses are dangerous traps of flimsy construction and a menace to the buildings where they exist. They should be care fully examined and miade fire proof. * * . About three weeks ago when things looked their worst in cot ton market affairs I issued a circular letter asking the people to stand together and make the fight to a finish for fifteen cent cotton. Todlay I want to renew that request and now call on every man who owns a bale of cotton to hold on to it tighter tLan lie ever has held and his retvard will surely be fifteen cents for his cotton. The more persistently that cotton is held the sooner will the price reach fifteen cents and the sooner will the cotton producers realize that they have won the greatest victory, in the history of the world. Common sense will convince any man that cotton will bring just what the owners of cotton will make it bring. you cannot get $100.00 for a horse if you will sell it for $75.00 and you cannot get 15 cents for your cotton if you will sell it for 11, 12, 13 or 14 cents. Pay no attention to the bearish arguments that will appear from time to time in the newspapers who are unfriendly to 15 cent cotton. Sit steady in the boat and victory will surely be yours.
