Hingle himself, his false, malicious statement to the contrary notwith standing. It may be that this self opinionated individual, when he charg ed that in former times, only represen tative men served as jury commission t ers, or words to that effect had him self only in mind, for I find that he served both under Judge Livaudais and Judge Robert Hingle. If he is blessed with the good fortune of knowing everybody in this parish and their qual ifications as jurors, what a pity that ' such an unknown genius should exist! e "Full many a flower is born to blush n unseen, and waste its fragrance on the desert air." The records in Judge Livaudais' time show that with the exception of Mr. Daunnoy{ who lived in the second ward, all of the jury commissioners came e from the 8rd. ward. Nobody knows this fact better than Felix S. Hingle, as he sat with a jury commission com posed of men who were all from the ..14. ward, whose names are of record. I invite him to refresh his freakish memory-on this score. And speaking of the jury commission, I had occasion to recently question one of the only men from another ward a who served as such as to his reason t' for resigning the position. His reply was that the position paid only five dollars per day, and his expenses rang- b ed from seven to eight dollars. These facts stand undisputed and it is plain that Felix S. Hingle began this a controversy with the false premise that b my predecessors appointed the jury , commission from various sections of a the parish. The records of the court are at his disposal to substantiate my statement, or to disprove it. Now, I wish to say that I am being attacked by this individual because of political pique and disappointment, which I propose to show `at the profler time. His efforts are purely to dis credit me in the eyes of the people of this parish, and when he uses the col umna of his own newspaper under an assumed name for such ignoble pur poses, I repeat emphatically that he is t a contemptible coward. As a defense a' he states all of the big dailies in the tl city permit the use of assumed names di m matters of correspondence. I admit bl this, but the owners, or editors, of tl these journals express their own in- si dividual opinions editorially, the prop- s: er, decent method of conducting a pi newspaper. " He also states that he believes I con tributed during the last campaign un ns der the signature of "Veritas" and ° "Paille-en-que." I wish to remove all " doubt from his mind by stating that I ' did, but the manner and circumstance of that correspondence, finds no para " l el with this. My efforts as corres or pendent at that time were both in aid of friends and in defense of myself, e who were .being bitterly assailed by z Felix S. Hingle and .his newspaper, in " the heat of a'bitter.political campaign. There is no campaign on at this time, r the election for the judgeship being two years off, and though he is trying hard to begin one against me, I say Id that, regardless of his loud boast that 'd he will elect the next Judge, a habit of n which he is periodically a harmless vic tim, the question of the next Judge *' will fortunately not be left to him, but to the full electorate of the Parishes of Plaquemines and St. Bernard, whose , people I have endeavored to serve well d and faithfully for the past six years. I regret exceedingly what should d d sqem to the average citizen the un pleasantness of this controversy, but 1 the purely personal and political par d pose of the original letter of "Citizen" otherwise known as Felix S,. Hingle, based upon facts which I have proved to be absolutely false, compels me to continue to resent by thib means this wilful attempt of a scheming politician to injure me. To anyone who has fol lowed this correspondence the last oef fort of this "Citizen" is ridiculous. He begins by raising the usual hue and cry that everything I said was false. In the very next breath he says he will confine himself to answering my com musication appearing in a previous is sue of the Gasette which he does, but does he prove any untruth of my as sertion, namely, that all of my pred cessors ,aipointed jury commissions' fromthevarious parts of the parish?' tuhis fact itands paramount in this is sqe. The bald statement was original ly made by "Citiasen" that if I had' done as my predecessors (that is, to( 'appoint jury commisioners from the l various wards) we would have had a b Ssessiona of the grand jury ad until C this same pers can prove his asse v tiem from the records,by his own words 6 he stands convicted in the eyes of right p thinking people of mallcious' falsifica- t !tion." a I Yours truly, a R.
